Jay Leno takes pay cut to save jobs of staff

Reports claimed that Leno, who was paid between $25-$30 million a year, has accepted a pay reduction to save the jobs of other members of his staff.

Deadline Hollywood, the website which first broke the news of the cuts, reported that Leno has previously said that he banks his entire salary from the Tonight Show and is able to live off money he earns on the stand-up comedy circuit and other numerous personal appearances.

Leno has hosted the Tonight Show from 1992 until 2009 when he was replaced by Conan O'Brien. But after poor viewing figures Leno returned to the Tonight Show in 2010 and O'Brien left with a $45 million pay off.

It is believed that the weekly budget for the show was $2.3m (?1.5 million) a week but that will now be reduced to $1.7m.

Leno is not the first late-night host to agree to a salary reduction. In 2009, CBS restructured David Letterman's salary and his show's budget.
