UPDATE: Thousands of Carnival Triumph Passengers and Crew Safe, Ship Stalled in the Gulf of Mexico Following Fire

Thousands of passengers and crew members of a stalled cruise ship are safe after a fire in the engine room of the vessel.

Carnival Cruise officials said The Carnival Triumph had a minor electrical fire around 10 a.m., that is now extinguished.

The vessel is currently without propulsion and the ship is operating on emergency generator power. The ship's technical crew is continuing to assess the damage and attempting to restore power.

In the meantime, a tugboat is being dispatched to the ship's location in the event it is needed. All appropriate authorities including U.S. Coast Guard have been notified

3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew are on board.

Coast Guard authorities say they are "monitoring the situation" and that there has been no request for assistance as of yet.

The ship was sailing approximately 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The ship?s automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and the fire was contained to the aft engine room.

Carnival Cruise officials released statements on the incident.
