House transportation bill would spend about $260B (AP)

WASHINGTON ? House Republicans are proposing to spend about $260 billion over the next 4 1/2 years on transportation programs as a way to preserve jobs, according to a draft bill being introduced this week.

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., who is chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and other GOP leaders are expected to introduce the bill on Tuesday. Mica's committee is poised to approve the measure on Thursday.

The bill would maintain current spending on transportation despite declining gasoline and diesel fuel taxes, which historically have paid for highway and transit programs.

A separate committee will decide how to cover the gap between gas-tax revenues and the spending levels proposed in the bill. GOP leaders have said they plan to use revenue from expanded oil and natural gas drilling, but haven't provided details. However, congressional aides knowledgeable about the proposal said it would include drilling off the Virginia coast and in federal leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The aides weren't authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be named.

The bill provides enough money to prevent the nation's roads, bridges and transit systems from falling further into disrepair, but not enough to significantly reduce the backlog of needed work on transportation infrastructure, transportation experts said. A congressionally mandated commission estimated in 2009 that it would require $200 billion a year to reduce the backlog while maintaining the current transportation system.

"Clearly this level of funding is inadequate to support our needs as a nation," said Joshua Schank, president of the Eno Center for Transportation, a Washington think tank that supports greater transportation investment.

But the bill is expected to save jobs in construction, bus manufacturing and other transportation-related industries in part because it allows state transportation departments to make long-term commitments of funds. Those kinds of commitments are usually necessary before companies can go forward with major new transportation projects.

Each $1 billion in transportation construction spending supports about 30,000 jobs, said Andy Herrmann, president of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The GOP bill is "holding along the lines of what we've been doing in the past," he said.

But that may be enough to propel the bill through the House in an election year where voter regard for Congress is at rock bottom and lawmakers are eager to show off an accomplishment.

The last long-term transportation bill expired in 2009. Congress has kept transportation aid flowing to states through a series of short-term extensions. The current extension expires on March 31.

The Senate is working on its own bill, which would spend $109 billion over two years. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., a co-author of the bill, says the bill's sponsors have a plan to pay for the measure, but hasn't detailed how that would happen.

Snedeker wins a shocker at Torrey Pines (AP)

SAN DIEGO ? Brandt Snedeker won the Farmers Insurance Open in a playoff no one imagined possible until Kyle Stanley hit a wedge into the water and made triple bogey on the last hole.

Snedeker had a tap-in birdie on the 18th and was so certain he would be the runner-up that he drove up to the media center for an interview, just in time to see Stanley run into trouble.

Both players made birdie on the 18th in the playoff, then Snedeker won on the second extra hole with a 5-foot par putt. Stanley's putt from about the same length caught the right side of the lip.

It was a devastating loss for Stanley, who led by seven shots in the round, and was four shots ahead as he stood on the 17th green.

Samsung Galaxy Note coming to Bell, Rogers and Telus in February

Those of you who seem to be more closely connected to the Maple Leaf than the pine needle might've jumped on the envious side at the news that folks across the border are getting their hands on the LTE Galaxy Note. Envy no more. Via blog post, Rogers has announced that Samsung's "phablet" creation will be surfing through its fresh 4G waves in the upcoming month. Aside from the Rogers branding we expect to see, it'll be hard to distinguish this Note from its AT&T brother, as it'll be identical in the specs department. Based on a page thrown up at Best Buy Canada, it looks as if it'll sell for $249.99 on a three-year contract (with Bell and Telus getting in on the fun, too), with the first of 'em shipping out on Valentine's Day. Desperate to be the first to try and fit this in your pocket? Head on to the source to join the carrier's reservation system.

Notion Ink explains OMAP over Tegra decision for the Adam II

While which chip ends up in a particular device will significantly affect its performance and access to future upgrades, it's not often that we get to peek behind the curtain and find out why those decisions were made. A post on Notion Ink's new Adam II development blog adds some transparency to the process, discussing the switch from an NVIDIA Tegra chip in its first Adam slate to a TI OMAP solution in the just announced tablet. According to the blog, while theoretical performance marks are nice, the company decided its expertise and that of available programmers would let it squeeze the most out of a Texas Instruments chip, as opposed to its first effort that didn't "fully utilize" the power of Tegra. Hit the source link for more details and a breakdown of some of the tech packed into the OMAP4 CPU, and keep an eye on the blog for more details in the run up to the Adam II's release.

Heat Edge Bulls, 97-93: LeBron James Scores 35 While Derrick Rose Misses Key Free Throws

MIAMI -- LeBron James scored 35 points, while reigning NBA MVP Derrick Rose wasted two chances in the final 23 seconds and the Miami Heat escaped with a 97-93 win Sunday over the Chicago Bulls.

Chris Bosh scored 24 points and added 12 rebounds for the Heat, who never trailed ? but this win in a rematch of last season's Eastern Conference finals was not easy. Dwyane Wade added 15 points for Miami.

Rose scored 34 points for Chicago, but missed a pair of foul shots that would have given Chicago the lead with 22.7 seconds left. He had made all 28 of his free throws in the fourth quarter this season.

And Rose had a shot to tie in the final seconds, but his short jumper bounced off the rim.

Bosh sealed it with two free throws with 0.1 seconds left for Miami, which has now won five straight over the Bulls ? counting the last four games of last season's East title series.

Both sides said this game was supposed to be just another regular-season matchup, one without extra meaning.

So not true.

The Bulls erased what was a 12-point deficit and tied the game at 84 on a brilliant layup by Rose with 6:55 left. The Heat answered with a 10-2 run, before Rose's three-point play with 49.1 seconds left cut the lead to 94-93.

Rose then lost the ball on a drive, but drew contact from Miami's Udonis Haslem and went to the line with Chicago down one with 22.7 seconds left. Rose's first hit the front of the rim and bounced away, and his second rimmed out. James grabbed the rebound and was fouled by Joakim Noah ? only to miss both free throws himself.

After the second miss, Bosh appeared to emerge with the rebound, but an inadvertent whistle led to a jump ball. James outleaped Taj Gibson, getting the ball to Mario Chalmers, who made one free throw for a two-point lead.

Chicago wound up getting one last chance with 9.9 seconds left, calling time-out. Naturally, it went to Rose, who weaved his way into the lane ? but came up short. Bosh got the rebound, and Miami began celebrating.

Rip Hamilton and Noah each scored 11 for Chicago, which got 10 apiece from Ronnie Brewer and Carlos Boozer.

The Bulls played without forward Luol Deng and guard C.J. Watson, both sidelined with wrist injuries. Watson may be back in Chicago's lineup as early as Monday, and Deng ? who has a torn ligament in his left, non-shooting, wrist ? is "very close" to a return, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said.

Miami took an 11-point lead early in the fourth on back-to-back 3-pointers from Shane Battier and James. The Bulls roared back, as they did for most of the day whenever the Heat seemed on the cusp of taking control.

They just never got the lead, despite Rose's best efforts.

"Two sick moves by D-Rose," Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant tweeted as he watched the game, marveling at two layups by Rose that knotted the game at 84.

Insistence that this was "just another game" notwithstanding, Miami started quickly. Wade appeared a bit more emotionally charged than usual after joining his teammates in the pregame huddle, and the Heat ran out to a fast early edge.

Maybe it would be more accurate to say they "jumped" out to that lead.

Wade set James up for three dunks in the first 7 minutes, the last of which is probably going to be replayed for quite a while. James appeared to be forgotten as he hovered on the weak side of the floor, so he darted toward the basket. Wade tossed a lob his way ? and the two-time MVP leapfrogged the 5-foot-11 John Lucas for a dunk that put Miami up 16-7.

Even the NBA took notice of that one: Within minutes, replays of the James dunk were sent out on the league's Twitter feed.

Chicago quickly settled down, getting within 24-22 at the end of the first quarter. But Miami scored 11 straight early in the second, the last seven of those coming with Wade and James both on the bench, to open a 35-24 edge. Wade's first points came with 6:14 left in the half, two free throws that gave Miami what was its biggest lead at 42-30.

The Bulls chipped away again, and by halftime Miami's edge was only 56-51.

Wade missed eight of nine shots in the first half and an airball dropped him to 1 for 10 early in the third quarter.

Chicago had a chance for its first lead when Rose attacked the rim moments later. But his layup was blocked by Joel Anthony, and James threw about a 65-foot pass to Wade for a dunk. James found Wade again for another transition slam less than a minute later for a 63-58 advantage.

The lead was still five entering the fourth. James made a 20-footer over Brewer with 0.2 left in the third to push Miami's edge to 76-71.

Notes: James had a large icepack strapped to his right shoulder during a first-half stint of rest. He was grabbing at the shoulder in pain early in the first quarter after a collision, but did not appear to have a serious issue. ... Boozer said he needed more than 20 tickets for the game. He's been spending part of his offseasons in Miami for several years.

UFC on Fox 2 opener: Camozzi takes out Jacoby

CHICAGO --Chris Camozzi is one tough guy.

The veteran fighter dislocated a finger in the second and fought through it by only throwing jabs and hooks. In the final round, he dropped Justin Jacoby with great outside leg kick. Camozzi pounced to go for the kill and worked a guillotine choke. Jacoby backed up to the cage where he tapped just seconds later at the 1:08 mark of the third.

Facebook sues to stop 'likejacking' scammers

?These spammers exploit the fact that social media engages us in an exciting new way,??McKenna said at a news conference at Facebook?s Seattle office. ?Social media revolves around trust. The reason we like it is that we count on our friends to recommend news stories, books, television shows and movies to watch. Spammers are now exploiting that trust.??

The AG?s complaint says Adscend and its affiliates send messages to Facebook users that appear to be from a friend. These bogus posts contain a link to seemingly salacious or provocative content, such as ?Cannot BELIEVE a 2 year old is doing THIS,? or ?{Video} OMG! See what happened to his Ex Girlfriend!??

The goal is to get you to a ?bait page? that appears to show the promised content. But it?s blocked by a message box that looks like it came from Facebook (it didn?t) that says an ?Age Verification? or ?Security Check? is required. In either case, you need to complete a short ?survey? to unlock the video.?

The survey page has links to a half dozen or more advertising websites that pay Adscend per click. These sites collect personal information and may require the user to buy something.?

The complaint also claims this advertising scheme is designed to ?propagate itself virally throughout the Facebook system.??

Before being directed to the bait page, the user is asked to ?Like? the page or click a box to continue. There?s no way for you to know that the ?continue box? is bobby-trapped. Click it and you?ve ?liked? the spammer?s Facebook page.?

Either way, the advertisement for the bait page is posted to the user?s Wall or Timeline and is published in the Facebook News Feed to all of the user?s Facebook friends.?

Facebook says it?s been hard at work trying to block this sort of spam.?

?Security is an arms race, and that?s why Facebook is committed to continually improving our safeguards while also pursuing and supporting civil and even criminal consequences for bad actors who target our users,? Facebook general counsel Ted Ullyot said.?

Would anyone fall for such a scheme? Facebook says it believes Adscend earns more than $20 million a year doing this.?

In an email to msnbc.com, the company says it does not comment on pending litigation.?

For years, we?ve been told about the dangers of clicking on a hyperlink in an email. Now, that same warning applies to Facebook posts. Be on guard. If that it doesn?t look like something your friend would post ? trust your instincts and check with them before you click.?

If you get sucked into a likejacking scheme, and you?re being led through a series of screens ? assume it?s a scam. STOP! And back out before you give personal information or buy anything.?

If you find one of these booby-trapped posts on your wall, delete it and notify Facebook. They have people who work around the clock to stop illegal spam.?

Country music great Haggard recovering from pneumonia (Reuters)

NASHVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) ? Country singer Merle Haggard, who was admitted to a Georgia hospital last week after illness forced him to cancel a show, was recovering from a host of health issues discovered while he was being treated for pneumonia, his spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

Haggard was admitted to hospital on January 17, when illness forced him to cancel a show in Macon, Georgia, just moments before taking the stage. He later said that being hospitalized "probably saved my life."

The 74-year-old singer, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, is recovering from double-pneumonia but was also being treated for a number of serious ailments that doctors discovered while he was hospitalized.

Haggard's pneumonia is "almost completely clear, while he is recovering from three stomach ulcers, the removal of eight polyps from his colon and diverticulitis in his esophagus," which were discovered by the Macon medical staff, according to his Los Angeles-based spokesperson Tresa Redburn.

"He will be back up and running in 30 days," said Redburn, adding that Haggard would be in the hospital for "at least a few more days."

"Thanks to the wonderful people all over the world that prayed their special prayers," Redburn quoted Haggard as saying.

"I'm a new man. Another special thanks to the folks of Macon, Georgia, for their kindness, their intelligence and probably saving my life," he said.

Haggard had to cancel the remainder of his January tour and was planning on beginning his performance schedule again in late February.

With influences ranging from Lefty Frizzell to Bob Wills to Jimmie Rodgers, Haggard is an architect of country music's so-called "Bakersfield Sound." He is best known for songs like "Mama Tried," "Okie from Muskogee" and "The Fightin' Side of Me."

Greek creditors urge quick deal after eurozone (Reuters)

ZURICH/ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece's private creditors pleaded on Tuesday with European officials who rejected their bond swap offer to hammer together a deal before Athens tumbles into a chaotic default.

Athens' hopes for a swift deal with lenders were evaporating after euro zone ministers on Monday rejected creditors' demand for a 4 percent coupon, or interest rate, on new, longer-dated bonds in exchange for existing debt.

The country is desperate for a deal to ensure funds from a 130 billion euro rescue plan drawn up by European partners and the International Monetary Fund arrive before 14.5 billion euros of bond redemptions fall due in March.

"It's important that all parties recognize how much we have at stake and work together and cooperate to find a solution," said Charles Dallara, who negotiates in the name of private bondholders through the International Institute of Finance.

He declined to comment on whether his group would back down on the demand for a 4 percent coupon billed as their "final offer" and said their position was already clear. Greece says it is not prepared to pay a coupon of more than 3.5 percent which would impose steeper losses on its private creditors.

Senior euro zone officials suggested they were preparing for another drawn-out battle despite the ticking clock. They want to make sure any debt swap deal does enough to bring Greece's mountainous debts back on track, to avoid the prospect of having to once again stump up funds for Athens.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble dismissed talk of the IIF's "final offer" with: "That happens in every bazaar."

"You do not need to be impressed by that," he said. "At least I do not."

Without a deal, Athens will be forced into a non-voluntary, hard default that could push other weak euro zone members closer to the edge, although experts are beginning to wonder whether the threat of contagion is as severe as it once was after the European Central Bank flooded the banking sector with nearly half a trillion euros of three-year money in December.

Standard & Poor's will likely downgrade Greece's ratings to "selective default" whether or not a debt restructuring is achieved with the voluntary buy-in of private creditors, but the ratings agency said the ripples might not spread.

"It's not a given that Greece's default would have a domino effect in the euro zone," John Chambers, chairman of S&P's sovereign rating committee, said.

The International Monetary Fund is more concerned, however.

It cut its outlook for global growth sharply on Tuesday, said the euro zone debt crisis was escalating and dragging down the world economy and called for policies to restore confidence.

GREEK DEAL STILL ACHIEVABLE

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said the two sides remain close to an agreement on a Greek debt swap, which he hoped would come this month rather than next.

Caught in the middle between creditors and European partners stepping up a game of brinkmanship, Athens was left clinging on to hope a deal could still be struck in time. It said it had the euro zone's support to complete the talks in the "coming days."

"In reality, we are now entering the final stretch," Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said in a statement.

"I believe everyone has now realized that Greece must be supported in its effort, which is of vital importance not only for us but for the euro zone as a whole and the global economy."

Conservative leader Antonis Samaras, head of one of three parties backing Greece's technocrat prime minister, told Reuters he expected the talks to be wrapped up by March 5 at the latest and said the country must head to polls as soon as the EU/IMF bailout was finalized.

He set April 8 as the deadline for elections.

"PLAN A MODE"

With weeks of talks yielding little progress and growing concern that Greece's fast-deteriorating economic prospects mean it will need more aid from partners either way, European policymakers appeared to be more willing to consider the previously taboo option of a so-called "involuntary" debt swap.

Both sides have so far firmly stuck to plans for a "voluntary" swap that would avoid insurance against a Greek debt default from being paid out.

"There has been a slight change in mood, but no change in the policy lines pursued," a senior euro zone source told Reuters when asked about the mood among policymakers on Greece.

A second euro zone source confirmed the perception of a shift but said: "We are still in Plan A mode."

A source close to the talks said creditors would go towards an involuntary debt swap if there was no agreement by the end of the week, once again raising the chances of a messy default.

Dallara said he was confident of large-scale participation by bondholders in the swap if the two sides were able to strike a voluntary agreement. He is expected to return to Paris to co-chair an internal meeting of creditors on Wednesday to discuss latest developments in the talks, the IIF said.

The bond swap is meant to cut 100 billion euros from Greece's debt burden of over 350 billion, in a bid to ultimately slash its debt from around 160 percent of GDP to a more manageable 120 percent of GDP by 2020.

Under the agreement drawn up in October to rescue Greece for a second time, bondholders would take a 50 percent writedown on the notional value of their Greek holdings.

Sources close to the protracted Athens talks said last week the two sides were converging on an agreement that would see private creditors accepting a real loss of 65 to 70 percent and new bonds with 30-year maturity.

Greece is stumbling through its worst post-World War Two economic crisis, with unemployment at record highs and frequent protests against austerity measures demanded by its international lenders as a condition for bailout loans.

The country is now in its fifth year of recession and has struggled to push through reforms demanded by lenders.

In a sign that Athens' troubles will be far from over even if a debt swap deal was sealed quickly, Schaeuble warned that all Greek political parties must commit to reforms or risk putting the country's latest bailout plan in danger.

Keystone activists to protest oil, Congress ties (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A coalition of environmental groups plans to stage a rally against "Big Oil's corruption" on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, hours before President Barack Obama delivers his State of the Union address to Congress.

Days after the White House handed them a victory by halting the Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline, environmental activists are stepping up attacks on U.S. lawmakers seen as too close to oil and gas companies.

A coalition of green groups promises hundreds of protesters

dressed as referees who will "blow the whistle" on lawmakers who have received campaign contributions from oil companies. The coalition did not give names or party affiliation of the lawmakers they would target.

The rally is organized by groups including 350.org, which staged large protests against the Keystone pipeline, including one that encircled the White House late last year to protest the project that would sharply boost oil production from Canada's energy-intensive tar sands.

The Obama administration last week rejected TransCanada's pipeline after Congress inserted language in tax legislation requiring a decision on the project by the end of February. Obama had previously delayed making a decision until after the November 2012 elections.

Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, said the groups hope to keep environmental issues at the forefront of national conversations leading up to the elections.

"Look, I'm a Patriots fan, but if Bill Belichick was caught paying off the refs for the Super Bowl I'd be outraged and so would everyone else," McKibben said, referring to the head coach of the National Football League team. The New England Patriots will play the New York Giants in the league championship next month.

"So why, really, is it okay that congressmen take huge sums from companies and then vote on their interests?" he said in an email.

Environmentalists oppose the Keystone project because of the high greenhouse gas emissions from processing Alberta's tar sands and because the pipeline could threaten a Nebraska aquifer that is a major source of drinking water.

Environmental groups threatened to sit out the election if Obama approved the pipeline, adding to pressure on the Democratic president who faces a tough election in a struggling economy.

Republicans, who say the project would create jobs, see Keystone as a major election issue and have vowed to take further legislative steps to force approval of the project. The House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee will discuss Keystone in a hearing on Wednesday.

Obama's re-election campaign released its first ad of 2012, challenging criticism of his energy record.

Jamie Henn, communications director for 350.org, said Keystone galvanized environmental activists. The groups, which also include the National Resources Defense Council, Greenpeace and others, believe they can draw attention to other environmental issues during the campaign.

Protesting oil industry influence on Congress taps into election issues such as Occupy Wall Street protest movement's anger at perceived special treatment of corporations, concern about government subsidies and other spending, and controversy over "Super PACs" spending large amounts of money on electoral campaigns, Henn said.

"We've got some reports that people are buying referee outfits in districts too ... so I wouldn't be surprised to see some penalty flags get thrown at some members of Congress' offices," Henn said.

Can Newt Gingrich win Florida without Mitt Romney's bucks?

Gaining momentum with a win in South Carolina, Newt Gingrich appears to be a serious contender in Florida. But Mitt Romney has the upper hand in organization and fundraising.

With a big win in South Carolina and momentum building in Florida, Newt Gingrich suddenly appears poised to be a contender.

At the very least, it seems like it will be tougher than Mitt Romney once envisioned to lock up the GOP nomination quickly, with Florida cementing a series of victories.

But Mr. Gingrich also faces a daunting challenge: fundraising.

Florida is a notoriously expensive market, and Mr. Romney has already been advertising heavily there ? virtually alone ? for weeks.

As a late surger, Gingrich isn't nearly as well-positioned as Romney is for either organization or funding.

He hasn't reported how much cash he's raised in the last quarter (his deadline to release those numbers is Jan. 31), but it's almost certainly significantly less than Romney, who had $19 million in his campaign war chest as of Dec. 31.

At the end of the last reporting period, Romney had a $14 million advantage over Gingrich.

And it's a challenge Gingrich is focused on.

Within minutes of winning the South Carolina primary, he tweeted: "Thank you South Carolina! Help me deliver the knockout punch in Florida. Join our Moneybomb and donate now."

And in his victory speech, he told supporters, "I need your help in reaching out to people in Florida ... to sign up, to donate, to get involved." He added, "We don?t have the kind of money that at least one of the candidates does, but we do have ideas."

The pleas helped. The Gingrich campaign announced on Monday that it raised more than $1 million in the 24 hours following the South Carolina win.

And Gingrich has some big donors ? most notably Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino magnate who contributed $5 million to a pro-Gingrich super political-action committee earlier this month that spent heavily to promote him in South Carolina, and may have helped him to victory.

On Monday, Jon Ralston, political reporter at the Las Vegas Sun in a tweet said that Mr. Adelson's wife, Miriam Adelson, has promised another $5 million to the super PAC,?Winning Our Future, which plans to spend heavily on advertising in Florida starting Tuesday.

Still, Florida is a formidable state to advertise in. The Wall Street Journal estimates it could cost candidates $10 million to campaign effectively there. And Romney, who has an extensive fundraising network, plans to raise that much before the end of the month.

Romney has tended to attract donors from among the Republican establishment, and he has proved adept at fundraising. According to The Wall Street Journal, one Romney event in January raised $2 million, more than double its goal.

With the deep-pocketed Rick Perry opting to leave the race, new opportunities have opened up ?for the remaining candidates. But it's uncertain who will best take advantage of them.

Mr. Perry endorsed Gingrich, but it's not clear that his followers will agree with him. Romney has already recruited many of Perry's top fundraisers, including the two men who co-chaired Perry's fundraising committee.

So far, the momentum seems to be in Gingrich's favor. And there's nothing like success to pull in more money.

But it remains to be seen whether Gingrich can make up such a large financial gap in a short time, and how much the money will matter.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta Recap: NeNe Tries to Bring Marlo to Africa, Kim Tries to Lose Weight

The Real Housewives of Atlanta are headed to South Africa, but apparently not before an entire episode dedicated to prep and packing. We recap who's staying, who's going, and who's itching for a fight in our THG +/- review.

NeNe's spending more time with her new BFF Marlo.

NeNe admits that they're both label whores; they bond over shopping and shoes. Marlo gives NeNe a tour of her home and I have to say, if Marlo sleeps with men to make her money she's obviously very successful at it.

NeNe and Marlo

She even gives her new gal pal one of her many Chanel bags even after NeNe calls Chanel an old lady bag. What are friends for? Plus 8.

NeNe's still waffling about whether to go to Africa and Marlo says she'd love to go on the trip ... so NeNe invites her along. Minus 10. Can NeNe do that? Hasn't Phaedra organized this trip? Yup but that doesn't stop NeNe from telling Marlo to come along.

Across town we've got the shape up wars. Both Kandi and Kim have to lose a few pounds but their going about it in completely different ways.

Kandi gets her self a power trainer who put her on a scale and then runs her through a boot camp style obstacle course. Plus 12. If she can keep that kind of workout up she'll be in killer shape.

Kroy tells Kim exercise is the only way to go. Kim's got other ideas. The quick fix girl gets a slim wrap that makes her look like a mummy on a trampoline.

To her credit she loses over 10 inches. Of course Kroy's no fool and knows you don't lose five pounds of fat by wrapping yourself in ace bandages. The water weight will be back in a couple of days but 10 inches gone looks good to Kim.

So how does she celebrate? With pizza of course. Plus 10. I love Kim.

Kim Zolciak Underwear Pic

Kroy's got to head to training camp for a month and the two of them are a little love sick at the thought of it. Kim plans a romantic evening at home.

If only she hadn't employed her parents to help her get it set up. The bath has bubbles and rose petals. She and Kroy are lit by candlelight and then Kim's dad walks in and tells them to be careful or name the kid after him. Minus 15.

That was worse than a mood killer. That was almost creepy.

Cynthia and Peter are still working on communicating better. All I see is Peter being pouty because she's running off to Africa without him and Cythina's glowing at the thought of getting away.

Cynthia laments that the last time she was in Africa she was too broke to see very much. This time she's going to enjoy the real Africa ... apparently that means high end hotels and upscale safaris. I think she needs to check her definition of real. Minus 8.

Phaedra prepares for the trip and Apollo gets ready for daddy day care as it will be just the boys for 10 days. Plus 10 because little Ayden is just too darn cute.

Phaedra's a little worried about NeNe coming along, little does she know that she's bringing some backup.

Phaedra and Apollo Photo

As everyone heads to the airport, NeNe's the last to arrive…but wait. Here comes Marlo. Plus 13 for the looks on their faces. Sheree and Phaedra are practically catching flies their jaws drop so low.

Kandi thinks NeNe felt like she needed some muscle and  it looks like Marlo's her enforcer in heels.

EPISODE TOTAL: +20! SEASON TOTAL: -209!

Next week, the safari officially begins and the claws come out. Let's see how many of the Real Housewives make it back to Atlanta in one piece.

Fast-moving snowstorm hits Northeast

A weekend storm blanketed the Northeast with a few inches of snow Saturday, creating slippery conditions and some delays at airports, though the storm was expected to move out to sea overnight.

The National Weather Service predicted 4 to 6 inches in New York City before the snow stops in the afternoon. Early Saturday morning flurries and freezing rain showers were expected for the Washington area. Philadelphia is under a winter weather advisory and could receive up to 4 inches of snow.

Up to 7 inches was predicted for southeastern Massachusetts, not much by the standards of a New England winter but noteworthy in a season marked by a lack of snow.

Video: Winter storms grab hold of U.S. (on this page)

The storm was just the second significant snowfall of the season for some Northeasterners, including in New York City and Philadelphia. A rare October snowstorm knocked out power to nearly 3 million homes and businesses in the region.

Road conditions were fair Saturday morning, officials said. Crews in Pennsylvania and New Jersey began salting roads around midnight and plowing soon after. By midmorning, the snow had turned to sleet in Philadelphia north through central New Jersey.

Few accidents were reported on the roads, helped by the weekend's lack of rush hour traffic, but New Jersey transportation spokesman Joe Dee cautioned drivers to build in more time for trips. Though temperatures will warm up this afternoon he said, forecasters expect the wet ground to freeze again overnight.

Flights arriving at Philadelphia Airport were delayed up to two hours because of snow and ice accumulation, but most departing flights were leaving on time, a spokeswoman said.

New York City had 1,500 snow plows at the ready, each equipped with global positioning systems that will allow supervisors to see their approximate location on command maps updated every 30 seconds, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a morning news conference.

The equipment was installed last year following a disaster of a storm that struck the day after Christmas of 2010, when even the city's plows were stuck and stranded in drifts, and streets remained impassable for days. Bloomberg said the GPS system has already led to "vastly improved communication" between supervisors and plow operators.

As always, some welcomed the snow.

Enough accumulated through the week for snowmobiling and ice fishing in New Hampshire, where cross-country ski trails and snowshoeing were open at Bretton Woods and other trails.

Elwewhere, light snow was falling again in Chicago Saturday morning. A snowfall Friday brought up to 8 inches and prompted the cancellation of more than 700 flights at Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports. Flight operations were back to normal at Chicago airports Saturday, the city's aviation department said.

In parts of South Carolina, voters in the Republican presidential primary were seeing rain Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Thunderstorms, some with hail, were predicted for the southeastern United States.

In the West, heavy snow was predicted for mountain areas of the western states, according to weather.com. Melt from unusually heavy snowfall this week combined with heavy rain will increase the threat of flooding throughout western Washington.

Officials: US drone strike killed Somali insurgent

(AP) ? A U.S. drone strike killed a British al-Qaida official fighting alongside insurgents in Somalia, officials said.

Three missiles fired from an unmanned aerial vehicle hit Bilal al-Berjawi's car on the outskirts of Mogadishu, according to a statement from the insurgent al-Kataib media foundation late Saturday. Berjawi was a Lebanese and British citizen who grew up in West London and fought in Afghanistan before going to Somalia in 2006.

"The martyr received what he wished for and what he went out for, as we consider of him and Allah knows him best, when, in the afternoon today, brother Bilal al-Berjawi was exposed to bombing in an outskirt of Mogadishu from a drone that is believed to be American," the statement said. "He was martyred immediately."

The strike was confirmed by a U.S. official in Washington. The official asked for anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

"Good riddance, and (I) hope al-Shabab leadership will come to their senses and cease the hostility in Somalia," said Omar Jamal, the first secretary in the Somali mission to the U.N., in an emailed statement.

Berjawi helped oversee recruitment, training and tactics for al-Shabab, who are fighting the weak U.N.-backed government. He was a close associate of late al-Qaida operative Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, who directed the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Berjawi is at least the fourth senior al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab commander killed in as many years. Last year, a Somali soldier shot dead Mohammed at a checkpoint and in 2009, U.S. soldiers killed Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan in a helicopter raid. In 2008, a U.S. airstrike killed reputed al-Qaida commander Aden Hashi Ayro and two dozen civilians.

Most observers say there are several hundred foreign fighters in Somalia, mainly clustered in training camps around the insurgents stronghold of Kismayo. Most of the foreigners are Africans from other nearby nations, but more than 40 Americans have also traveled to Somalia to join the insurgency, according to a report from the House Homeland Security Committee.

Many British citizens have also returned to Somalia and joined the fight on both sides. Berjawi was the second British citizen killed in Somalia in two days; on Friday an official al-Shabab Twitter feed displayed documents belonging to Said Abdi Jaras from London as proof that the Somali government official had been killed by al-Shabab in battle.

Somalia has not had a functioning government for 21 years. Currently the weak U.N.-backed government holds the capital with the support of 9,500 soldiers from Uganda, Djibouti, and Burundi. Other parts of the country not occupied by al-Shabab are held by friendly militias or Kenyan or Ethiopian troops. Both nations sent in troops amid concerns that Somalia's instability will leak over their borders.

Micro Vault Mach is Sony?s first USB 3.0 flash drive

USB 3.0 has been around for over two years now, and it is slowly filtering down to all portable storage devices including pocket-friendly flash drives. The latest manufacturer to embrace the fastest SuperSpeed USB standard is Sony with the announcement of a new range of flash Micro Vault sticks.

The Sony Micro Vault Mach will be offered in 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities with transfer speeds of up to 120MB/s reads and 90MB/s writers. The only exception to that is the 8GB Mach, which is limited to 60MB/s reads. Real world usage will most likely be well below those figures, but still a significant boost over USB 2.0.

The Mach range includes a silver aluminum casing and retractable USB connector. Sony has been very generous with the warranty and your Mach will be covered for 5 years. There?s also a couple of pieces of downloadable software in the form of File Rescue for recovering deleted files, and Pict Story for creating photo presentations automatically from the pictures stored on the drive.

In terms of the overall design of the stick, it?s nothing special beyond having a metal rather than plastic casing. It weighs a mere 14 grams and measures 19.7 x 9.7 x 69.4mm making it easily pocketable, but not something you want to hang of a key chain.

All models of the Mach range are set to become available before the end of January, but so far pricing hasn?t been announced. A 16GB USB 3.0 stick typically costs upwards of $25, a 32GB around $40, and then prices spike for 64GB drives. Expect pricing in the same region for the Mach drives.

Teacher Sexual Misconduct is on the Rise (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Public school teachers in multiple states made headlines on a fairly regular basis in 2011 for all the wrong reasons. Thousands of dedicated and caring educators across America must already be cringing because similar news articles are once again announcing teacher arrests for student sexual assault and abuse charges in the first few weeks of 2012.

California math teacher Marie Johnson of Livermore High School was arrested last week for having a sexual relationship with a 13-year-old male student, according to the Huffington Post. Substitute teacher Steven Royer was arrested for the alleged battery of a third grade student in Indiana, according to WLFL News. Sacramento, Calif., art teacher Ben Horner was arrested for statutory rape and oral copulation of a 16-year-old- student at James Logan High School last week, according to the Sacramento Bee. Alabama elementary school teacher Daniel Acker Jr. was arrested two weeks ago for abusing a fourth grade student, according to the Associated Press.

Although we are less than one month into the new year, students have been placed into the daily care of these alleged abusers for many months. A reasonable person cannot expect any profession to always be free from scandal, but the growing number of teachers indicted for sexual misconduct is cause for concern.

Parents are used to worrying when their children are playing at the park after school, riding with friends who are novice drivers and when they are spending the night away from home; they should not have to cross their fingers and hope they return from school with their innocence still intact.

Perhaps a little bit of a "Big Brother" approach is necessary in America's public schools. Surveillance cameras are no longer uncommon in school hallways and may now also be necessary in the classroom and faculty parking lot. Students in many schools must permit backpack inspections and allow staff to review cellphone messages, texts and call logs while on school grounds.

The invasion of privacy for the sake of safety should be expanded to include all taxpayer-funded employees at the school as well. Reviewing communications activity would not stop all sexual predators posing as teachers, but it would make courting victims a whole lot harder.

Wood-burning stoves: Harmful or safe?

ScienceDaily (Jan. 16, 2012) ? Wood-burning stoves are a popular source of heating in many countries. However in recent years there has been much debate about the potential negative health effects associated with wood smoke. A Norwegian researcher has studied the influence of combustion conditions on the emissions and their health effects.

Wood-burning is controversial in many countries, including the USA and Canada. Some groups wish to ban wood-burning whereas others are trying to convince opponents that clean-burning technology is environmentally friendly.

"The physical and chemical properties of particulate matter from wood-burning have great influence on how these particles may affect our health. Worsening of cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are the main concerns," says Anette Kocbach B?lling from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.

During 2011, B?lling was invited to several international symposia to share her findings on how wood smoke particles generated under different combustion conditions may influence our health.

Different burning conditions give different particles

"Particulate matter from different sources has different physical and chemical properties, and several factors are important when we study their health effects" says B?lling.

These include:

  • Chemical composition -- some metals and organic substances are more harmful to the cells in our bodies than others.
  • Solubility -- water soluble particles will dissolve easily in the lung lining fluid and be removed from the lungs.
  • Size -- particle size determines the deposition rate and probability in our lungs. In addition, the smallest particles have a larger surface per mass unit, providing a larger area for interaction with the cells in our lungs.

How do we burn wood?

There are many types of stoves available, and people use different types of fuels of varying quality. During good combustion conditions with sufficient oxygen supply and high temperature, most of the organic substances will be burnt in the stove.

There are several factors that determine how complete the combustion process is in a stove:

  • type of fuel (wood versus pellets)
  • moisture content
  • draft
  • combustion technology in the stove (new clean-burning versus old, conventional stove)

Particles emitted during burning

Wood-burning particles can be split into three classes based on their physical and chemical properties and the combustion conditions:

The particles emitted from poor combustion conditions ("smouldering" combustion) contain relatively large amounts of unburned organic substances from the wood, some of which may be carcinogenic, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These particles are quite water soluble and are assumed to be removed relatively quickly from the lungs.

With improved combustion conditions ('burning with flames'), carbon particles with an insoluble core are formed. Depending on how good the combustion conditions are, the carbon particles have varying amounts of organic compounds on the surface. These particles are likely to remain in the lungs for longer periods of time since they are insoluble.

With complete combustion, for instance in pellet stoves, all the organic material in the wood is broken down in the combustion chamber. Non-combustible substances (ash) will be emitted from the chimney, these are mainly water-soluble salt particles like potassium sulphate. When these particles are deposited in the lungs, they will dissolve quickly in the lung lining fluid and thus be removed.

How do these different particles affect our health?

Particles from complete combustion (salts) seem to have the least effect on lung cells in culture and are removed most quickly from the lungs. The amount of particles emitted from complete combustion is relatively small, so overall these particles seem to have limited influence on human health.

When it comes to emissions from burning of logs in old stoves versus stoves with new clean-burning combustion technology, we don't have enough knowledge to distinguish between the health effects of particles from smouldering and flaming combustion. The only thing we can say with certainty is that emissions are reduced by improved combustion conditions and that we are thus exposed to smaller amounts of particles when new stoves are used. More research is needed to be certain of how particles from different combustion conditions affect our health.

Several of the major cities in Norway have programmes to replace old, conventional stoves with new clean-burning ones. The purpose is to reduce emissions of particulate matter and contribute to cleaner air.

Jon Huntsman quits presidential race

(AP) ? Republican Jon Huntsman has dropped out of the GOP presidential race and has endorsed Mitt Romney.

Huntsman said the former Massachusetts governor gives the Republican Party its best shot at defeating President Barack Obama in the November general election.

After staking his candidacy on New Hampshire, Huntsman finished third in the primary there last week. He faced a likely defeat in South Carolina's primary on Saturday.

Huntsman's resume had suggested he could be a major contender for the GOP presidential nomination. But the former Utah governor and diplomat found a poor reception for his brand of moderate civility, which he had hoped would draw support from independents as well as Republican moderates.

Huntsman announced his decision Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

AP Exclusive: Dad of CA killings suspect homeless (AP)

YORBA LINDA, Calif. ? The father of the man suspected of killing homeless men in Southern California is himself homeless and says his son last week showed him a picture of one victim as a warning of the danger of being on the streets.

Refugio Ocampo, 49, also told The Associated Press on Sunday that his son came back a changed man after serving with the Marines in Iraq, expressing disillusionment and becoming ever darker as he struggled to find his way as a civilian.

The father said he lost his job and home, and ended up living under a bridge before finding shelter in the cab of a broken-down big-rig he is helping repair.

His 23-year-old son, Itzcoatl Ocampo, was arrested Friday in connection with the serial killings of four homeless men since late December.

Refugio Ocampo said that on Jan. 11 his son came to him with a picture of the first victim, who was killed on Dec. 20.

"This is what's happening," the father quoted his son as saying.

"He was very worried about me. I told him, `Don't worry. I'm a survivor. Nothing will happen to me. I will find something. Count on it,'" the father said.

While Refugio Ocampo lives away from his family, they remain close. He saw his children every day, and his wife brings food to the parking lot where the truck is located in the city of Fullerton.

Itzcoatl Ocampo has been living with his mother, uncle, and little brother and sister in a humble rented house on a horse ranch surrounded by the sprawling suburbs of Yorba Linda.

Refugio Ocampo, who said he was educated as a lawyer in Mexico, immigrated with his wife and Itzcoatl in 1988 and became a U.S. citizen. He described building a successful life in which he became a warehouse manager and bought a home in Yorba Linda. In the past few years he lost his job, ran out of savings and lost his house.

His son entered the Marine Corps right out of high school in 2006 instead of going to college as his father had hoped. Itzcoatl Ocampo was discharged in 2010 and returned home to find his family in disarray, the father said.

Refugio Ocampo and his youngest son, Mixcoatl, 17, both described a physical condition Itzcoatl suffered in which his hands shook and he suffered headaches. Medical treatments helped until he started drinking heavily, both said.

"He started drinking like crazy, too much, way too much," the father said.

A neighbor who is a Vietnam veteran and the father both tried to push Itzcoatl to get treatment at a Veterans hospital, but he refused. Refugio Ocampo said he wanted his son to get psychological treatment as well.

"He started talking about stuff that didn't make any sense, that the end of the world was going to happen," he said.

"Before, he had the initiative to do things, the desire. But after the military, he didn't have any of that," he said.

That was far from the son who in high school was a polite and motivated student, he said.

Refugio Ocampo said investigators came to him on Friday night and showed him surveillance photos from a crime scene, but he did not recognize his son as the person in the images.

"If he did it, it wasn't right, obviously. But there's something wrong with him," he said.

Turtle Beach XP400 wireless gaming headset hands-on

Turtle Beach announced a duo of new XBOX 360 and PS3 gaming headsets on day one of CES, and we were able to spend a bit of time with one of them, the XP400, on the show floor. It's Turtle Beach's flagship gaming headset, featuring adjustable Dolby 5.1 virtual surround sound, a non-AD2P dual-pairing Bluetooth radio for picking up phone calls during gaming sessions, a 15 hour rechargeable battery and dual-band 2.4/5GHZ built-in WiFi.

The actual over-the-ear pieces have a much better layout from previous models, though there are almost as many buttons as there are on the controller you'd be wielding -- with volume up / down, chat volume up / down, mute, Bluetooth pairing, limiter button and tone buttons. The included dual-band WiFi adapter that connects to your gaming console of choice is small and pretty minimalistic in design. The adjustable surround angles feature seems useful but we can't help but to feel it's a bit gimmicky -- we have a hard time figuring out which setting is better. One feature that we really like is the new Limiter function, which allows you to keep the volume relatively high to listen for those footsteps (lower in volume) but won't blow your ear drums out when a RPG rocket (explosion-like volume levels) hits you in the face. The sound was also crisp and loud as we completed our spec-op mission at the Turtle Beach gaming booth, where the headset's noise-blocking abilities proved to be particularly handy. Hit up the gallery below for a close look at the $220 gaming headset set to be available this quarter.

Selig 'very hopeful' for added wild card this year

updated 3:50 p.m. ET Jan. 12, 2012

PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. - Commissioner Bud Selig is "very hopeful" another wild card team from each league will be added this season.

Selig says that a committee formed to work out details of expanding the playoffs from eight teams to 10 is dealing with scheduling issues. Addition of a second wild card in each league would add a one-game play-in between teams with the two best records in each league that are not division winners. Selig says that would mean condensing the overall playoff schedule.

Selig says the committee knows he is an ardent supporter of the concept. Under the new collective bargaining agreement, MLB and the players' union must agree by March 1 whether to add the new round for 2012.

(AP) ? The euro hit its lowest mark in over a year Friday on fears of a widespread European downgrade, in a sour end to what had been one of Europe's brightest weeks since the debt crisis intensified.

Earlier Friday, Italy had capped a strong week for government debt auctions, seeing its borrowing costs drop for a second day in a row as it successfully raised as much as ?4.75 billion ($6.05 billion).

It had been a rare week of good news for Europe's financial system. On Thursday Spain and Italy completed successful bond auctions. Meanwhile, European Central Bank president Mario Draghi noted "tentative signs of stabilization" in the region's economy.

However markets across Europe fell in afternoon trading Friday on reports that rating agency Standard & Poor's was poised to downgrade the debt of several countries in the eurozone and talks in Athens between the Greek government and private investors failed to reach agreement on a crucial debt swap.

In late afternoon trading in Europe, the single currency hit a 17-month low of $1.27 on concerns about the downgrade, while investors dropped their higher-risk investments in European stocks and bonds for more secure US Treasuries.

A credit downgrade would escalate the threats to Europe's fragile financial system. It could drive up the cost of European government debt as investors demand more compensation for holding bonds deemed to be riskier than they had been. Higher borrowing costs would put more financial pressure on countries already contending with heavy debt burdens.

For the Friday Italian auction, investors demanded an interest rate of 4.83 percent to lend Italy three-year money, down from an average rate of 5.62 percent in the previous auction and far lower than the 7.89 percent in November, when the country's financial crisis was most acute.

While Italy paid a slightly higher rate for bonds maturing in 2018 which were also sold in Friday's auction, demand was between 1.2 percent and 2.2 percent higher than what was on offer.

The results were not as strong as those of bond auctions the previous day, when Italy raised ?12 billion ($15 billion) and Spain saw huge demand for its own debt sale.

"Overall, it underscores that while all the auctions in the eurozone have been battle victories, the war is a long way from being resolved (either way)," said Marc Ostwald, strategist at Monument Securities. "These euro area auctions will continue to present themselves as market risk events for a very protracted period."

Italy's ?1.9 trillion ($2.42 trillion) in government debt and heavy borrowing needs this year have made it a focal point of the European debt crisis.

Italy has passed austerity measures and is on a structural reform course that Premier Mario Monti claims should bring down Italy's high bond yields, which he says are no longer warranted.

Analysts have said the successful recent bond auctions were at least in part the work of the ECB, which has inundated banks with cheap loans, giving them ready cash that at least some appear to be using to buy higher-yielding short-term government bonds.

Some 523 banks took ?489 billion in credit for up to three years at a current interest cost of 1 percent.

Peter Schaffrik, head of European rates strategy for RBC Capital Markets, said the ECB had helped scale back fears prevalent late last year of an imminent European financial collapse.

"A good deal of credit should be assigned to the ECB, which has been, and will be, we argue, supporting the European financial system, its sovereigns, and to some degrees the European economies via significant liquidity injections and lower rates," Schaffrik wrote in a note to investors.
