Column: Boxing digging out of hole in London

LONDON (AP) ? Just why Muhammad Ali was trotted out to make a cameo appearance at the opening ceremonies remains a mystery that organizers have yet to fully explain. Surely, the sight of the former gold medalist so terribly frozen by Parkinson's couldn't have done anything to further the Olympic ideal or help the sport that made him, at one time, perhaps the most famous man on earth.

What could help boxing is an Olympic-sized comeback in the ring. And there's no better spot than in a country where boxing roots run deep and passions run high.

Sunday night a crowd jammed into the ExCel arena cheered wildly as British lightweight Josh Taylor made his Olympic debut with a first-round win over Robson Conceicao of Brazil. Their enthusiasm wasn't limited to just the home fighter; they showed appreciation for some surprisingly high-quality first-round bouts.

There's a sense that boxing has turned the corner, started to dig its way out of the Olympic doghouse and back into respectability. Some rule changes have helped make the fights more entertaining, the decisions less controversial, and the whole process more honest.

A series of scandals that peaked when Roy Jones Jr. was robbed of a gold medal in 1988 ? but still somehow was awarded the trophy as best boxer of the Seoul Olympics ? nearly got the sport thrown out of the games. It remains under suspicion whenever something seems awry, as evidenced last year when there was a report ? quickly dismissed by amateur boxing officials ? that Azjerbaijan was promised two gold medals in London in exchange for $9 million.

NBC stopped televising fights for a time, then relegated them to its cable channel. But women are fighting in the Olympics for the first time this year, 79 different countries sent boxers to London, and the capacity crowds at the venue seem to be loving every moment of it.

"When I was elected president of AIBA, I made it very clear: It's time for change, and we've made a lot of reform to make our sport clean, honest, and transparent," said Wu Ching-Kuo of Taiwan, who has headed the international amateur boxing association since 2006 and recently became a full member of the International Olympic Committee.

That doesn't mean some of the decisions aren't still suspect. Judges still tend to favor fighters from countries the judges' countries have good relations with, the scoring system remains in need of a good fix, and some of the officials remain inept.

Decisions can still surprise, too. One came Sunday night when U.S. lightweight Jose Ramirez appeared to be pulling away in the final round of his fight with Rachid Azzedine of France only to narrowly take a 21-20 first-round win.

His teammate, Errol Spence, followed a few bouts later, making his welterweight Olympic debut with a 16-10 win over Myke Ribeiro de Carvalho of Brazil. That made four wins in four fights for a U.S. team that won just one bronze in a desultory performance four years ago in Beijing.

A few more nights like this, and NBC may want to get some flag-waving boxers on in prime time.

"I heard my father and mother in the stands yelling for me," Spence said. "It kept me throwing punches when I got tired."

Spence's teammates were also cheering him on from the balcony above, in sharp contrast to the team in Beijing. USA boxing is still so dysfunctional that a new head coach was appointed just a month ago and can't even be cleared to work the corner. But there's some promising talent among the 10 male and three female boxers and a feeling they can bring home some medals.

One of those hopefuls is Ramirez, the son of Mexican immigrants who is pursuing a business degree at Fresno State. He's fought since the age of 8, won his first national tournament at 90 pounds, and now has a handful of sponsors behind him. Lately, Oscar De La Hoya has been pursuing him via Twitter in case he should win a medal and want to turn pro.

Nike is one of his sponsors, and Ramirez fought his first bout in bright yellow shoes that probably glow in the dark.

"Is that the color of medal you want?" asked an apparently color-blind reporter.

"I want gold, but that's close enough," the 19-year-old replied.

To return the U.S. to the days when it won boxing gold by the handful, he and his teammates will have to deal with a strong British team, tough Russians and fighters from former Soviet republics, and a Cuban squad that's rebuilding but always difficult.

It's early, and a lot could still go wrong in a sport where things always seem to go wrong. But with women fighting for the first time next Sunday, and a sport that seems to finally be getting its act together, this may be boxing's best run in a long time.

For the excited crowd in London, it wasn't exactly like watching Ali ? known as Cassius Clay when he won the gold in Rome.

But it was a lot better than watching him in the opening ceremonies.

Factors To Consider In Las Vegas Limo Rentals | alwaysmadeup.com

People seek the services of limos for numerous reasons. Some hire them for parties, weddings, graduation balls and prom or just to get a sense of extravagance and fun. But, searching for great Las Vegas limo rentals is not as simple as searching your yellow pages and getting ads.

Here are some of the several things well worth looking into when considering Las Vegas limo rentals.

* Reputation ? This is an element that will make or break a firm. You could try asking around town and find out if anyone else had the satisfaction of hiring a particular firm. Most likely you will find a few people who recognize the company that you?re selecting and can give you several insights if the rental service is bad or good.

Another wise decision would be to go online and look for evaluations. These days, the majority of rental firms possesses their own web sites and has their names in many internet classified ads. You can try searching for evaluations from other previous clients o

Park: No mechanical issues in Calif. coaster stall

VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) ? Officials at a Northern California theme park say they have ruled out mechanical problems for the stalling of a roller coaster carrying a dozen people about 150 feet above the ground.

The riders were stranded upright aboard the new Superman Ultimate Flight roller coaster at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo for less than 90 minutes Sunday afternoon before the roller coaster was restarted.

Park spokeswoman Nancy Chan said crews on Monday found no mechanical problems with the ride or track.

They are still investigating what caused the coaster to stall and plan to run its cars later in the day.

None of the stranded riders was injured.

London protesters march against 'capitalist' Games

(AP) ? About 500 people critical of the economic impact and corporate flavor of the London Olympics marched Saturday near the Olympic Park, determined to send a message that Britain is not united in backing the games.

The protest march came hours after police arrested more than 130 bicyclists who had defied an order to avoid cycling in groups around the stadium during Friday night's opening ceremony.

Police said they had ordered the protesters to remain south of the River Thames, to keep them from blocking thousands of ticket-holding guests from attending the opening ceremony. The cyclists said they were held in a cordon by police, and later arrested, for trying to cycle in lanes restricted for official Olympic traffic.

Occupy London, part of a global movement that has waged demonstrations against financial institutions and capitalist policies, said some cyclists were members of the movement. They said police cordoned off more than 100 cyclists at one road junction near the stadium as Friday's ceremony was beginning and held them there several hours.

Saturday's protest, the largest so far against the games, drew a mix of left-wing and green activists who decry the Olympics as a corporate juggernaut rolling over residents and their civil rights.

They marched peacefully, chanting against what they called the "Corpolympics," watched by police officers on foot and motorcycle.

The protesters contend that the often-cited Olympic boost to traditionally gritty, working-class east London is an illusion, whereas major corporate sponsors such as McDonald's and Coca-Cola gain from the 9.3 billion pound ($14 billion) games. They said the mass arrests at the cycling demonstration, and limits on corporate branding designed to protect sponsors, show that the games are a threat to civil liberties.

Underscoring that message, the marchers passed one of the apartment buildings that have had British army ground-to-air missiles deployed on its roof. That security measure, designed to stop a hijacked aircraft from being crashed into an Olympics venue, has drawn fierce local opposition.

Olympics organizers and the government say the games will leave a legacy of thousands of new homes and jobs, and a major new park in a long-deprived area.

One protester, Michael Coulston, said the British government chose to spend billions on attracting visitors "to one location for a couple of weeks" rather than to build infrastructure of lasting benefit to all Londoners.

Like many on the march, Coulston said he doesn't object to the games themselves, but feels that recession-hit Britain was sending out a false message: "Let's pretend to the world that we're happy."

Many Britons were initially unenthusiastic about the games, a pessimism bolstered by pre-Olympic headlines about security troubles and feared transit chaos. But the mood has lifted now that the event is happening, especially after director Danny Boyle's spectacular opening ceremony.

East End resident Leonard Grieves, who came out of his house to wave an Olympic flag at the passing protesters, said the games had brought real benefits to the district.

"We've seen the area go from almost a wreck to a really nice place," he said.

Divers earn Canada's 1st medal of London 2012

Jennifer Lukas, CTVOlympics.ca

Canadian diver ?milie Heymans made history on Sunday, partnering with Jennifer Abel to capture her fourth Olympic medal.

Heymans, of St. Lambert, Que., and Abel, of Laval, Que., earned the bronze medal in the women's synchronized 3m springboard competition. The medal is Canada's first of London 2012.

With the performance, Heymans became the first Canadian summer athlete -- as well as the first female diver -- to win four medals at consecutive Olympic Games.

"We really worked very hard for this. We are really happy that it went very well," Heymans told RDSOlympiques on Sunday.?

Heymans earned her first Olympic medal in the 10m synchro event at Sydney 2000. Competing with Anne Montminy, she took silver. In 2004, she added bronze in the same event with Blythe Hartley. Four years ago at Beijing 2008, Heymans won her first individual medal with silver in the women's 10m platform.

Most of Heymans's success has come in the 10m platform events. Following Beijing 2008, Canada's most-decorated diver swapped to the springboard. She partnered with Abel in 2010.

For Abel, 20, and Heymans, 30, the London 2012 turning point occurred?in their fourth round of dives. In fourth-place overall with two dives to go, their biggest challenge loomed: the reverse 2.5 somersault.

"This is the one that I can hit for nines, or the one that I can miss," Abel has said of the dive. "I'm pretty sure that if this dive is going to go well, the rest of my dives are going to be good too."

Six points out of a medal position, Abel and Heymans would need to perform the dive well just to catch the field.?

They very nearly nailed it.?

Heymans over-rotated slightly, causing a slight splash on the entry. But as the scoreboard lit up with 74.70, it became clear that they had done enough.

The Canadian pair edged into third place -- a position they managed to hold over Italians Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape, even through a shaky final dive.

Abel and Heymans began their 2012 season with a silver medal at the 2012 World Cup, but that success did not last. The duo struggled with their consistency for much of the year.

Headed into London, Abel believed they had worked past the trouble.

"We are less nervous, we are having more fun," Abel said. "We're just doing our dives and getting closer to the perfect 10."

Chinese duo Wu Minxia and He Zi were about as close to perfect as possible throughout their own list on Sunday.?China has won a medal in every Olympic synchronized springboard competition since the event's induction in 2000.

Wu and He continued the trend, posting a final score of 346.20. The win marked China's sixth of London 2012 and their third in the pool, after two Chinese swimmers picked up Olympic titles on Saturday evening.

Americans Kelci Bryant and Abby Johnson were second with a score of 321.90, while Heymans and Abel racked up 316.80 points of their own, for third.

"Now we feel the pressure has dropped and right now it's a lot of fun," Heymans said. "I'm really pleased to win this medal with Jennifer."

Both divers are scheduled to compete in the individual springboard competition, beginning Friday. They are both considered medal contenders in the event, but Abel is the reigning World bronze medallist.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Friday he is releasing an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel, a previously announced move that appeared timed to upstage Republican rival Mitt Romney's trip to Israel this weekend.

The stepped-up U.S. aid, first announced in May, will go to help Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defense system. The system, known as Iron Dome, has proved successful at stopping rocket attacks fired at Israeli civilians from close range, including from Gaza.

Obama announced the new military assistance as he signed a bill in the Oval Office expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel.

As he sought to underscore his commitment to Israel, the president first said the increased aid totaled $70 million, then said the number was actually $70 billion, even though the smaller figure is correct.

Obama said the bill underscores the United States' "unshakable commitment to Israel."

The White House focus on Israel this week comes as Romney prepares to visit Jerusalem. The presumptive GOP nominee is a critic of Obama's policy toward Israel and has promised to ramp up U.S. aid to the Jewish state, although Obama officials say the administration already provides record levels of funding.

A Romney spokeswoman said the former Massachusetts governor was happy to see steps being taken to enhance security cooperation with Israel.

"Unfortunately this bill does nothing to address yesterday's evasiveness from the White House on whether President Obama recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which raised doubt about the president's commitment to our closest ally in the region," said Romney spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg.

Romney is in London on the first leg of an overseas trip designed to burnish his foreign policy credentials.

The White House subtly injected itself into Romney's trip on Thursday after Romney caused a stir by calling London's problems with Olympics preparation "disconcerting."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama "has the utmost confidence" in Britain's ability to host the games.

Obama planned to continue competing with Romney for attention during the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games, which Romney was scheduled to attend while in London. Romney led the organizing committee for the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.

The Obama campaign was airing an ad for American audiences during the opening ceremonies featuring Obama promoting his middle-class political pitch.

"I believe that the way you grow the economy is from the middle out," Obama says in the ad, echoing a standard campaign refrain. "I believe in fighting for the middle class because if they are prospering, all of us will prosper."

With the ad, Obama guarantees himself a presence during opening ceremonies despite the free media Romney might get by being there in person.

A new and improved SLA conference in 2013 | Upstate New York ...

Posted on 27 July 2012.

A New and Improved Conference in 2013

This Plan is Our Plan:
Connect, Collaborate and Strategize for a Better SLA Annual Conference

Plans for SLA 2013 in San Diego are shaping up. The 2013 event reflects exciting new features that YOU, the members of SLA, have called for in recent surveys, discussions on the leadership list, recommendations to the 2011 CE task force, and conference attendee feedback.? The San Diego conference will be more focused, more flexible, and support more collaboration among units.

What?s new and different for 2013?

  • Fewer but better CE sessions.? Continuing education will be offered on a single day (Saturday), and ALL CE programming will be Division-based and vetted according to SLA Professional Development standards.? Divisions decide for themselves how much to charge for their CE sessions within a wider range of cost options.? Association-sponsored professional development courses have moved online as to not compete with division offerings at conference.

Think quality, not quantity:? These courses will provide focused learning opportunities that will have???? a true impact on?practical skills, knowledge development, and career advancement.? Our goal is for educational content to be of immediate, problem-solving relevance, with actionable takeaways.

  • Conference will start and end a bit earlier.? Opening events a full day early will allow us to close the conference Tuesday evening, thus potentially saving the Association money on convention center rental costs and saving you the cost of a hotel night and an additional day out of the office.

The schedule does reduce the total number of programming slots by one, but divisions are already getting creative in response:? they?re collaborating more and experimenting with new ways to produce events, such as holding an annual business meeting and educational programming online, outside of conference.

  • Four 120-minute time slots provide opportunities to dig deeper into the most relevant topics and offer more advanced programming.? Divisions have been asking for greater flexibility for in-depth programming ? you have been heard!
  • Leadership development training is integrated and expanded.? The pre-conference Leadership Development Institute has been replaced by broader leadership development programming during the conference, and all interested members are invited to attend.
  • The Awards event will be held on Sunday, encouraging broad participation in a re-conceptualized program.
  • Tours move to Wednesday.? We?ll still have the great tours you won?t want to miss, or you can just stay over to enjoy San Diego.

Focus on Relevance

Relevant and engaging program content is at the heart of a successful SLA Annual Conference & INFO-EXPO.? To build the strongest possible program, the Annual Conference Advisory Council, in conjunction with SLA staff, will review all requests for programs.? We expect to decrease the number of under-attended sessions, encourage collaboration among units, and ensure that we are providing our members with opportunities to improve their skills and knowledge, hone expertise, advance and expand their careers, contribute to the success of their organizations, and become leaders of the profession.

Looking into the Future Together ? We?re FUTURE READY

This plan is well-aligned with your SLA Board?s strategic vision.?? We all recognize that the annual conference is SLA?s biggest membership benefit, as well as our largest source of income.

Our commitment in response to your feedback is to increase collaboration across SLA?s divisions in pursuit of more focused, refined content. The result?? Planners? collective professional experience and institutional knowledge will ensure conference programming is relevant to your needs, providing a range of options from the highly specific to the broadly accessible.

Together, we can make our shared experience in 2013 the best SLA Annual Conference yet!

See you in San Diego!

Board Liaison to the 2013 Annual Conference Advisory Council

Syrian legislator from Aleppo defects to Turkey

AMMAN (Reuters) - A Syrian parliamentarian representing the northern province of Aleppo said on Friday she has defected to Turkey, becoming the first member of the rubberstamp assembly elected in May and dominated by President Bashar al-Assad's Baath Party to defect.

"I have crossed to Turkey and defected from this tyrannical regime ... because of the repression and savage torture against a nation demanding the minimum of rights," Ikhlas al-Badawi told Sky News Arabia.

Opposition sources Syrian troops and armor are amassing around the northern city of Aleppo, Syrian's main commercial and industrial hub, to crush armed resistance to Assad that has been gathering momentum following a military crackdown on street demonstrations against his rule.

The authorities chose Badawi, a Sunni Muslim, to run for parliament on behalf of the "laborers and peasants" sector, a term for state backed labor and farmers unions who are guaranteed half the seats in the 250 seat assembly.

Badawi, a mother of six, was also a member of the Baath Party, which took power in 1963 military coup that destroyed the country's democratic institutions in favor of a Soviet style political system dominated by Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Intensified ground and aerial bombardment on Syrian cities by Assad's forces in recent weeks has prompted diehard Baathists and Assad's loyalists to defect.

They have been mostly Sunni Muslim, from the majority sect at the forefront of the 16-month uprising against Assad.

Nawaf al-Fares, Syria's ambassador to Iraq and a former Baath Party chief in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor, fled to Qatar through Jordan two weeks ago.

Fares, according to opposition sources, is a friend of Manaf Tlas, a brigadier general in the Republican Guards and a member of Assad's inner circle, who fled Syria earlier this month.

Short Madonna concert gets boos from Paris crowd

PARIS (AP) ? A small Madonna concert that the pop star said was intended to celebrate France's tolerance instead tested it, drawing boos and cries of "refund!" when she left the stage after just 45 minutes.

The show Thursday, billed as an intimate event at Paris' noted Olympia club, was streamed live on YouTube. By Friday morning, the channel that showed the event disabled comments and had more than 12,000 dislikes compared with 10,000 likes.

An invitation to tweet about the show appeared to back fire ? audience members used the suggested hashtag (hash)MDNAParis to complain. The rebroadcast of the show cuts off when Madonna leaves the stage, apparently before the crowd realized the concert was over.

Madonna's press agent, Liz Rosenberg, said in a statement that the star's occasional club shows in the past "were never more than 45 minutes."

The show was "planned as a heartfelt thank you to France which she expressed at the start of the show," the statement said, and the performance at Olympia, a venue for top French artists, "was her way to honor her love for French artists, French cinema and a tribute to France's long history of welcoming and inspiring artists, authors, painters, poets and minorities from other countries over the years."

The show cost Madonna nearly $1 million to produce, the statement said, and keeping the prices at $100 involved a "tremendous effort."

The show was announced after France's far-right National Front threatened to sue Madonna after the singer showed a video at a Bastille Day concert in Paris with an image of the party's leader, Marine Le Pen, with a swastika on her forehead.

"I've heard that a certain Marine Le Pen was upset with me," Madonna told the crowd, according to the newspaper Le Parisien. "It's not my intention to make enemies."

Most Prostate Cancer Patients Don't Die From the Disease: Study

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Men with prostate cancer are more likely to die from other conditions, such as heart disease, than from their cancer, a new study finds.

Living a healthy lifestyle that helps prevent chronic diseases can prolong life even among men with prostate cancer, the researchers added.

"Our study is the first to analyze specific causes of death among men with prostate cancer," said lead researcher Mara Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

Most men who died from prostate cancer over several decades of the study were men diagnosed when they were older or diagnosed before the advent of screening for prostate-specific antigen (PSA), she noted.

"We hope the study will have an impact on the clinical management of men who receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer," Epstein said.

"We hope it will encourage physicians to use the diagnosis as a teachable moment to encourage men to modify lifestyle factors, like losing weight, increasing physical activity and stopping smoking," she explained. "We believe that adopting a healthier lifestyle may reduce a man's risk of other chronic medical conditions that ultimately account for more deaths among men with prostate cancer than the disease itself."

The report was published July 25 in the online edition of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

For the study, Epstein's team used the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program and the Swedish Cancer and Cause of Death registries to collected data on the causes of death among more than 700,000 men.

U.S. deaths were for 1973 through 2008; for Swedish men it was 1961 through 2008, the team noted.

Over these periods, 52 percent of the Swedish men with prostate cancer died, as did 30 percent of American men with prostate cancer in the study.

Of these deaths, however, only 35 percent of the Swedish men died directly from prostate cancer and only 16 percent of American men died from the disease itself, the investigators found.

In addition, as the study continued, fewer men died from prostate cancer while deaths from heart disease remained the same.

By the last five years of the study, 29 percent of Swedish men with prostate cancer died from it as did 11 percent of American men, the researchers calculated.

Deaths from prostate cancer varied by age and year of diagnosis. The most deaths were among older men and among men diagnosed before screening for PSA began, they added.

With PSA screening, prostate cancer was diagnosed early and more low-risk cancers were identified, the researchers explained.

Dr. Durado Brooks, director of prostate and colon cancer at the American Cancer Society, said that "this is a lot of reinforcement for a lot of information we already know about. Many more men die with prostate cancer than from prostate cancer."

Brooks added that "prostate cancer is largely a disease of older men, and many of the men who are diagnosed have other medical problems that end up killing them."

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing, and therefore not lethal. In a recent study it was reported that only about 10 percent of men die from prostate cancer whether they receive treatment or not, he noted.

For Brooks, these findings argue against PSA screening, which too often "leads down the path of unnecessary treatment."

"Men should understand that not every prostate cancer needs to be found and every prostate cancer that's found does not necessarily need to be treated," he said.

Another expert, Dr. Louis Kavoussi, chairman of urology at North Shore-LIJ Health System, The Arthur Smith Institute for Urology in Lake Success, N.Y., added that "prostate cancer does kill and if you pick it up early, it can be treated."

The problem with PSA screening is that too many men are treated when they don't have to be, he said. "It's not bad to detect prostate cancer. The bad thing is that you treat everybody," Kavoussi suggested.

"We need to become smarter about who actually needs to be treated and when people need to be treated," he added.

Many men don't need to be screened, Kavoussi said. Those who should be screened are men with a family history of prostate cancer, blacks and anyone else at high risk, he noted.

Twitter confirms site issues, working to resolve things

It's a rough day for internet communication. First Google Talk, now Twitter. The microblogging service confirmed that it's currently having some issues -- a fact independently verified by our frustrated staff -- adding that "Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue." We'll let you know when you can safely return to your regularly scheduled tweeting.

Update: Everything seems to be back to normal. You know what to do.

Update 2: Twitter just posted an apology and explanation for the outage on its blog. Turns out, tweets weren't making their way to the web because both a primary and back-up system in Twitter's data centers failed simultaneously, leaving us bereft of 140-character nuggets of wisdom for about two hours. Rest assured, VP of Engineering Mazen Rawashdeh and his team have apologized for the inconvenience and are working to prevent the problem in the future.

More of the burning issues for NFL teams as they head into training camp

The chances of Eli Manning raising another Lombardi Trophy after the 2012 season seem unlikely given how lucky the Giants were all last season.

NFL TRAINING CAMPS ARE HERE! NFL TRAINING CAMPS ARE HERE!

The rookies are frantically thumbing through three-ring binders and the veterans will be filing in from today until the end of the week. Last week, we covered the first 16 teams ? ??and talked about what those teams might be talking about ? so let's get to the rest. Here we go:

Miami Dolphins
On July 28 ? just two days after Dolphins report to Nova Southeastern University ? Champions League winner Chelsea will face AC Milan in a soccer friendly at Sun Life Stadium, marking the only time you'll see the words "Champions," "winner" and "Sun Life" in the same sentence this year.

Since the QB depth chart is currently a series of stacked question marks, I expect a second straight year of big numbers from Reggie Bush. Last year Bush ? the guy who hadn't had a 100-yard rushing game since his rookie season ? broke the 100+ mark four times and, in Week 15, left 203 yards of cleat prints across Buffalo's defense.

Minnesota Vikings
It's safe, guys. You can finally start taking offseason phone calls from that Mississippi area code. Shh ? shh ? he's not coming back.

New England Patriots
The Patriots come into the season with the easiest schedule in the league, with a veteran team that features the fewest rookies (and the fewest undrafted free agents). They spent all but one of their seven draft picks on defensive players, hoping to improve a defense that was only out-sucked by Green Bay (Which you can only get away with when your offense averages 400+ yards and 32+ points per game. Sorry, Tampa.).

New Orleans Saints
Quarterback Drew Brees and coach Sean Payton had been together since both of them arrived in New Orleans in 2006. They collected a 62-34 regular-season record together, with four playoff appearances and a Super Bowl win. Payton has been grounded for the season so it'll be interesting to see how Brees fares and whether, by Week 6, he's morphed into a mini-Peyton, assuming more control of the offense. The rest of the team has to prepare for ? and endure ? ?a "Fresh Prince" style coaching swap: Aunt Vivian will be played by Aaron Kromer for the first six games, by Joe Vitt for the remainder of the season.

New York Giants
Yes, they won the Super Bowl and spent the offseason adding diamond-encrusted rings to their homeowners' insurance policies. But despite the confidence of The Littlest Manning and the pants-soiling speed of their pass rush, the Giants also had a lot of luck on their side, especially in the fourth quarter.

The plus side: They collected a record-tying seven final-quarter comebacks.

The minus side: Their average margin of victory was a tight-fitting two points and they lost at least three games in the last fifteen minutes, once by allowing Charlie Whitehurst to lead Seattle to a 20-point 4th quarter and by letting Aaron Rodgers move the ball 80 yards in the final 58 seconds.

Shoved into a cardboard box and buried at least 10 feet below the minus side: Vince Young ? VINCE YOUNG ? orchestrated a game-winning drive, throwing the go-ahead TD to Riley Cooper. That catch makes up 50 percent of Cooper's career TDs.

Adding the toughest schedule in the league to the 29th ranked defense makes me think Tom Coughlin won't have the opportunity to use his one annual smile this year.

New York Jets
I like to think that when Tim Tebow selects his 12 disciples, he'll consider using Antonio Cromartie's kids.

Oakland Raiders
If the McFadden was a McDonald's menu item, it would only be available for 12 or 13 weeks a year.

Philadelphia Eagles
If they added a dessert called a McVick, it would be a turnover. (WORK WITH ME HERE.) Last season, Vick made an attempt to stay in the pocket, rather than race around Sonic the Hedgehog-style ? and he paid for it. Although he set career highs for both passing attempts and passing yards, he also through a career-worst 14 interceptions. Statistically, he also endured his worst game since December 2006, a Week 10 loss to Arizona where he had a Tebow-ish passer rating of 32.5.

Numbers aside, Vick needs to find a way to stay healthy this season because there's really no backup plan. After sending Vince Young to Buffalo, their next option at QB is either Mike Kafka (Career Stats: 11-16, 0 TD, 2 INT) or, um, seeing what that guy with the T-shirt cannon can do. (Career Stats: 50 percent cotton, 50 percent polyester).

Pittsburgh Steelers
Can we just talk about the Pirates for a sec? Because they're two games out of first in the NL Central and are actually a solid team, instead of the trash fire that they've been since 1992.

San Diego Chargers
A: The Nile, the Shenandoah, the Willamette and Philip.

Q: What are Rivers that run backwards?

San Francisco 49ers
Shh ? this year we're NOT going to replace Alex Smith's offensive coordinator during the offseason. Let's see what happens when he hears Greg Roman's voice FOR TWO SEASONS IN A ROW.

Seattle Seahawks
Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Flynn and rookie Russell Wilson will all compete to see who hands the ball to Marshawn Lynch and, no joke, I think Wilson is the best option. We've seen what Jackson can('t) do and Flynn spent four seasons working on his clipboard arm in Green Bay (although he did get to start in Week 17, which is sort of like when you were eight and your dad would trade you seats so you could pull the car into the garage.) Wilson is athletic, a solid leader and he's going to be amazing in The Hobbit.

St. Louis Rams
The Rams are the perfect choice to send to London for that Week 8 Euro-exhibition game, mainly because the English crowd is used to watching football players who can't use their hands.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs haven't won a game since last October 16 and those ten straight losses (the ones where they were outscored by a combined 325-156) were pretty much the worst finale since "Lost." I've looked into the eye of this island and what I saw was terrible.

Tennessee Titans
When I noticed that I was legitimately intrigued by a Matt Hasselbeck vs. Jake Locker quarterback battle, I assumed that it was a side effect of taking expired medication. It wasn't. I AM intrigued.

Washington Redskins
No, Bob Kraft. RGIII wasn't the little robot in Star Wars.

OECD: Tunisia signs multilateral agreement on fiscal co-operation and

During his visit to Tunisia, the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Angel Gurria, met with the Tunisian Prime Minister, as well as government ministers and the President of the National Constituent Assembly, in order to discuss the co-operation between Tunisia and the OECD.

The Organisation has a long-standing relationship with Tunisia, particularly within the framework of? the OECD-MENA Initiative on Governance and Investment for Development. Mr. Gurria also took part in the opening ceremony of a high level conference organised by the OECD Development Centre and the African Development Bank on the subject of ?youth employment in North Africa?.

The Secretary-General presided over the signing ceremony with Tunisia of the?Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters. This Convention, a multilateral agreement developed jointly by the Council of Europe and the OECD, is the most comprehensive multilateral instrument available for tax co-operation and exchange of information. It helps counter cross-border tax evasion and ensures compliance with national tax laws, while respecting the rights of taxpayers.

G20 Leaders, at their Los Cabos Summit, ?strongly encouraged all jurisdictions to sign the Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance?.

Tunisia is the third African country, after Ghana and South Africa, to sign the Convention since it was opened for signature to all countries in June 2011.

Angel Gurria, OECD Secretary-General, at the signing ceremony said: ?By signing the?Multilateral Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters, Tunisia sends a strong message to the international community. Already a Member of the Global Forum, you wish to go further than the international standard on transparency and effective exchange of information?.

The Secretary -General and the Tunisian Prime Minister also signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will allow Tunisia to share its expertise with the 34 member countries of the OECD, in order to boost efforts to find a driving force for economic and social change, as well as environmental development.

Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali said: ?Signing the Convention and Memorandum of Understanding with the OECD represents an important step for the new Tunisia in meeting international standards and highlights our commitment to adhering to the different mechanisms and tools of the OECD in order to generate stronger and more inclusive growth, as well as creating jobs with integrity and transparency.?

In May 2012, Tunisia adhered to the?OECD Declarations on International Investment and Multinational Enterprises; on Propriety, Integrity and Transparency in International Business and Finance; and on Green Growth

Why Even ?Good? Dogs Need to Obey Leash Laws | Pets Best ...

A dog with pet health insurance sits in a camping chair, wearing a leash.

I recently had a nerve-wracking experience while camping with my dog and infant son. One afternoon as we walked through the campground, I noticed two large dogs running toward us: ears alert, eyes focused on us.There were no people nearby and the closest campsite was about 100 yards away.

Working in the pet insurance industry, I understand the importance of ensuring my dog always wears her leash, but despite her barking and my commands for the other dogs to ?get outta here!? the dogs continued to come at us. With my baby in a front carrier, I couldn?t help but worry I was about to watch a gruesome dog fight happen.

Just before all heck broke loose, the dogs? owners came running. It took them a few minutes because no one had noticed the dogs had left their campsite until they heard me yelling. The dogs wouldn?t obey a single command until the owners had them by their collars.

A recent survey on the Pets Best Insurance Facebook page revealed 27% of dog owners don?t always follow leash laws ? and that includes the nearly 4% who think their dogs never need to be on leashes. Here are the top 3 reasons why leash laws should be followed 100% of the time:

1. Unpredictable Situations
The best-behaved dogs can react unpredictably in new situations, especially if they?re scared. Even if you?re alone on the trail/river/lake, others can show up and change the scene in an instant. Children, vehicles, animals, and even bad weather can cause a dog to forget what ?come? means.

2. Hidden Hazards
When you?re hiking and no one else is around, it may be especially difficult to obey leash laws. But often these laws are in place to protect your dog?s life. While having pet insurance plans may help in the event of an accident or illness, sudden cliffs, loose rocks, animal traps, natural hot springs, deep snow, toxic plants and wild animals are all potentially very dangerous to dogs. Keeping your dog on a leash ensures you?ll always know where he?s headed, and you can help him in an emergency.

Or Call 877-738-7237 to speak with a Pets Best Insurance Agent to Add a Pet to Your Current Policy

3. Vulnerable On-Leash Dogs
It?s common for on-leash dogs to feel vulnerable when approached by off-leash dogs. They sense that the other dogs are free to do as they please, while they?re tethered to their human. The result can be fearful or protective behavior, which may set off a ?fight or flight? instinct in your dog.

If your dog chooses ?fight?, you could end up in hot water. Legally, you?d be held responsible for injuries to humans and pets and damage to property. You could also face citations from local law enforcement, not to mention the awful feeling knowing your pet caused harm that could have been prevented.

But my dog hates being on a leash!
If your dog really needs to run free, take her to an off-leash dog park. This helps ensure she only comes into contact with other friendly dogs who can handle themselves on their own.

If your pup loves to swim, try a 20-foot cotton web training lead. It?s long enough to let your dog feel like he has some freedom, and gives him the ability to go off-trail or swim to fetch that stick over and over.

How do you feel about leash laws? Let us know in the comments.
