China's manufacturing declines, but at slower pace

BEIJING (AP) ? A business survey shows China's manufacturing declined again in September, though the slowdown might be bottoming out.

HSBC Corp.'s latest purchasing managers' index, based on a survey of more than 400 companies, was 47.9 for September, slightly up from 47.6 in August. The index measures manufacturing activities on a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 show a contraction.

The HSBC report shows China's manufacturing contracted for the 11th straight month in September, as new export orders fell at the sharpest rate in 42 months amid weak international demand.

HSBC's China economist Hongbin Qu said in an accompanying statement that "the sharper contraction of new export orders and the lingering pressures on job markets mean that Beijing should step up easing to support growth and employment."

Ranch Dressing with Eartha Kitsch: Hidden Danger for your Pets

I usually try to keep things pretty light over here but I wanted to post to get the word out about something. As you know, I love my pets like they're my kids and I know that so many of you do too. For some time now, I've been a member of a group that is fighting to get dangerous pet treats off of store shelves and when reflecting on ?all of the sweet photos that so many of my friends post of your own pets on their blogs, I wanted to share some info with you.

Did you know that on the shelves of most retailers, you can find pet jerkies and treats that can not only make your pets horribly ill but can kill them? Sadly, it's true. Most vets and pet owners don't even know about this situation. Though word is leaking out, it's slowly leaking out - and that's just not good enough if you ask me. ?Of the known cases, 360 dogs have died and 2200 others are currently very ill from eating pet treats made in or with ingredients outsourced from China. And those are just the cases that are known about. There are no doubt countless thousands of other cases were pets have become sick and in many cases died and the owners do not know why. I can not bear the thought of any of your pets becoming ill or dying.

Please take a moment to see what is the treats that your pets are eating. If they're from China, dump them. If they're made by Waggin' Train, Canyon Creek Ranch or Milo's Kitchen, then dump them. You may be saying, "They have to be safe! The government wouldn't let them be on shelves if they weren't." Unfortunately, that's not true. Most of you can probably remember news stories about people and pets dying from tainted foods that have come from China. There was a reason that this happened and it's because inspections and laws are not nearly strict enough. And in the case of these treats, the FDA does know about them but as they have not been able to specifically identify the ingredient or ingredients that is harming pets, they can not issue a recall. And quite honestly, they're not trying hard enough to. One manufacturing plant even refused to let them come in to inspect and still, their products are being shipped around the world for consumption by beloved pets.

Please take the time to watch this informative news story about why these treats are still on shelves:

If you or someone that you know are feeding your pets treats, please google "dangerous pet treats" and view the news stories in both video and written format. The word has simply got to get out. Thousands of pet owners have lost their pets and have seen them suffering in horrible pain and will never realize that it was from the jerkies and treats that they were giving to them out of nothing more than love.

Besides the news links, you can learn a lot more on this Facebook page:

And if you are feeding your pets a treat or jerky and can not tell if it was made in China or if it includes ingredients from China, the resources there can be very helpful in discerning the truth. Just click on the tabs on that top of that page for resources. And if you're in doubt, just post and ask. People are always glad to help there.?

If you'd like to sign the petition to help get these treats and jerkies pulled, please click here.?
This is not a lie nor is it propaganda. It's a very sad truth. Please learn what is in your pet treats and pet foods. We're the first line of defense in keeping our pets with us for long, happy lives. The focus is in a large part on chicken treats to a good extent, but experts are recommending that we do not feed our pets ANY food or treat products made in China - or with ingredients outsourced from China.

To date, there are also pet foods and treats that have caused adverse reactions and deaths that are not from China. Please check out the website Truth About Pet Food here. By using the tools on the left hand side, you can look up your pet's food and see if there have been any complaints on their site. You can also join their email list and they will send you notifications of any reports or recalls.?

Thanks y'all.

Until next time,

x's and o's,?

NFL refs approve deal, ready for Sunday games

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- NFL officials ended their labor dispute with the league by approving a new eight-year contract with a 112-5 vote Saturday, then hustled off to the airport to get to work.

Next stop, stadiums around the country.

And, the officials hope, anonymity.

''The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,''' said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. ''That's how we like to work.''

The vote ended a labor spat that created three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew criticism of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.

''It was pretty much 'Come on in and vote,''' Green said. ''We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games.''

They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place.

The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.

''We are obviously pleased to hear it,'' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.

The deal came together quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night.

Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.

The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

''I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned,'' Green said. ''If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well.''

Fans cheer refs, and Ravens beat Browns 23-16

BALTIMORE (AP) ? The regular NFL officials returned to action, and the ending of their first game was eerily familiar to the one that hastened the exit of the replacement refs.

This time, however, there were no replays or arguments at the end. Just another win by the Baltimore Ravens over the Cleveland Browns, 23-16 on Thursday night.

If not for two failed desperation passes into the end zone in the closing seconds, the returning officials might have had to work overtime on their first night back.

Cleveland began its final drive with 1:05 to go on its own 10. Rookie Brandon Weeden moved the Browns to the Baltimore 33 before a fourth-down pass into the end zone fell incomplete. But a personal foul penalty on Baltimore linebacker Paul Kruger gave winless Cleveland one more chance.

That pass sailed out of the end zone.

"Too much juice," Weeden lamented.

The final sequence was not unlike the controversial ending of Monday night's Green Bay-Seattle game, when a Hail Mary pass was ruled a touchdown. That play, and the furor it created, hastened negotiations that brought the regular officials back.

The lockout ended late Wednesday, bringing about the exit of the unpopular replacement refs. And so, finally, the tenured officials were in place for Week 4.

"I felt so bad for that Green Bay situation," Ravens running back Ray Rice said. "Replacement refs, their families, I can't knock them. The scrutiny they were under. That kind of scrutiny is bad. It's hard going from like Pop Warner to the big leagues."

As they walked onto the field hours before this game, the officiating crew received a round of applause and shouts of encouragement from fans in the lower sections. Head linesman Wayne Mackie and line judge Jeff Seeman both tipped their caps to acknowledge the support.

And then, before the pregame coin flip, referee Gene Steratore greeted the players at midfield by saying, "Good evening, men, it's good to be back."

Many in the sellout crowd of 70,944 stood and roared their approval.

Afterward, Ravens coach John Harbaugh echoed the sentiment of the crowd.

"Welcome back to the officials. Good to have them back," he said. "These guys are really good. The communication was good. I didn't agree with every call, but they were excellent."

Joe Flacco went 28 for 46 for 356 yards, threw one touchdown and ran for another. Yet, it wasn't until Cary Williams returned an interception 63 yards for a score at the end of the third quarter that the Ravens (3-1) put some distance between themselves and the young Browns (0-4).

"I thought our secondary made plays that had to be made, especially at the end there when they were knocking at the door," Harbaugh said. "Cary Wiliams was the difference in the game with the interception return for a touchdown."

The fans waited until the third quarter to boo the officials. On a 13-yard completion from Weeden to Benjamin Watson, Ravens safety Bernard Pollard was called for a helmet-to-helmet hit. The crowd jeered the call, but replays appeared to confirm the penalty.

The 15-yard markoff set up a 51-yard field goal by Phil Dawson that got the Browns within 16-10.

Late in the quarter, Williams ambushed an out pattern by Travis Benjamin and took the interception down the right sideline for a 13-point lead.

It was the 13th consecutive home win for the Ravens, the longest current run in the NFL, and their streak of 10 straight wins in the division is also the most of any team. Baltimore has also won nine straight over Cleveland.

Anquan Boldin caught nine passes for 131 yards, and Torrey Smith had six catches for 97 yards and a score.

Weeden went 25 for 52 for 320 yards, but rookie running back Trent Richardson gained only 47 yards rushing on 14 carries. Dawson kicked field goals of 51, 50 and 52 yards, the last one with 4:33 left to make it 23-16.

It's the third time since 1998 that the Browns have lost their first four games. They finished 2-14 in 1999 and 5-11 in 2009.

Coach Pat Shurmur applauded the performance of the refs, and acknowledged he deserved an unsportsmanlike conduct call in the fourth quarter.

"I can't do that," he said. "It's an emotional game, and I got to make sure I keep my emotions in check."

Cleveland played the majority of the game without wide receiver and punt returner Joshua Cribbs, who sustained a concussion while returning a kick late in the first quarter.

Cribbs had his helmet knocked off and lost the handle on the ball after absorbing a hard hit by Dannell Ellerbe. It was legal tackle, shoulder to helmet, and the officials did not call a penalty. Cribbs lay prone for several minutes before finally rising to his feet and walking off the field.

Flacco went 16 for 26 for 186 yards and a touchdown to stake the Ravens to 9-7 halftime lead.

NOTES: Former Browns and Ravens RB Jamal Lewis was inducted in Baltimore's Ring of Honor. ... Cleveland safeties Tashaun Gipson and Usama Young both sustained knee injuries. ... Dawson is the seventh player in NFL history to kick three FGs of at least 50 yards in a game.

Hate

big_blackIt's a powerful thing, this Internet of ours. The greatest tool for the distribution of knowledge, the administration of compassion, and development of conversation ever created. And the events of this week have shown how it can be a platform for tolerance and understanding, for love and peace. Particularly touching was the story of a man who, with the assistance of friends and the Internet, was able to confront a tormentor with his misdeeds, bringing the young troll to heel and redeeming a child who surely knew not what he did. An example for the ages of gentleness and cooler minds prevailing over humanity's companion and adversary, hate. Yes, isn't it pretty to think so?

The Happy Entrepreneur (by Paul W. Smith)

037-Steve Jobs Happy Face-1

I?ve asked myself the following question literally hundreds of times.? There are stacks of books with entrepreneurial stories, books about the life of Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Ellison, et al.? We know these guys are driven, talented, obsessed, ruthless, workaholic and a little bit lucky (see, e.g., How to Spot an Entrepreneur).? We envy them and even try to model our lives after them, but why?? What makes them happy?

A passion for the pinnacle of money, power and prestige could be a good answer, but surely these high achievers know that someone always comes along to nudge you off the platform.? Consider Bill Gates; in an astonishing display of fiscal virility, he rented the entire Hawaiian island of Lanai for his wedding to Melinda.? One would assume this was a happy occasion, as they are still husband and wife after 18 years.? Bill set a new standard for opulence, until billionaire Larry Ellison came along and bought Lanai outright.? Larry has not been forthcoming about his intentions for the purchase (to date, he has been married and divorced four times).?

It is worthwhile to remember that ?happiness? is much more than a new-age, feel-good buzzword sparring with ?balanced?, ?centered? and ?good karma? in the titles of bestsellers and self-improvement workshops.? America?s founders trusted Thomas Jefferson with drafting the first version of the Declaration of Independence, and his second sentence is one of the most elegant and profound ever written.? There is more to this journey than just life and liberty from British rule, Jefferson wrote.? It is also about pursuing happiness.?

Although this happiness thing is in our mission statement, it has proven elusive.? In 1988, Bobby McFerrin promoted a two step process, the first of which was ?Don?t worry.?? Whether or not it worked, it made Bobby a lot of money.? History is unclear on how happy he was.

Politicians routinely ask if we are better off now than we were four years ago.? Numbers are tallied and scrutinized.? How much do we earn?? How many new homes are we building?? How many iPhone5?s were sold in the first 24 hours?? It?s been over 200 years since Jefferson suggested happiness as one of the key metrics of the American experiment and the government still hasn?t found a good way to measure it.?

The traditional metric for happiness has been the GDP per capita, a number representing the total value of goods and services produced in the country per unit human.? This presumed surrogate for standard of living only works if making and using stuff leads us to happiness.? According to the CIA (one of several agencies which tabulate GDP data) the top three countries in the world in this category are Monaco, Liechtenstein and Luxembourg.? The U.S. is in the 19th spot.?

?We love to talk about people who are poor but happy and rich people who are probably miserable, but what?s the real story?? The polling gurus at Gallup took it straight to the source, surveying folks directly to ask just how happy they really are.? The results show the top three happiest countries are Denmark, Finland and Norway.? On this list the U.S. ranks 11th, just ahead of Costa Rica.

The confusing message in this data has not gone unnoticed.? Americans are kicking butt on Life and Liberty, but two out of three is just not good enough.? Inquiring minds need to know; are we happy??

There?s a saying in engineering ? ?You can?t control it if you can?t measure it.?? Vermont, Maryland, Seattle, Somerville, Wisconsin and California?s Nevada City are just a few of the states and cities that are developing measures of happiness. ?The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is working on an official index.? This stuff we keep getting more of, is it really the right stuff?? What if economic growth is harming the environment without improving the real quality of life?

For many pragmatists the whole idea of happiness is just too ?fluffy?.? Work hard, stay focused, count your blessings, and be thankful you?re not living in a poor country like the tiny South Asian nation of Bhutan, where the average life expectancy is 67 years and annual income is $2000.?

Back in 1972, the King of Bhutan, sensing that money and happiness were not well correlated, called for a Gross National Happiness index.? National policies based on the GNH limit tourism, ban tobacco, and keep motorists away from town centers every Tuesday.? The 7 million people of Bhutan are warm, friendly, and measurably happier than they were 40 years ago.?

You don?t have to travel to Bhutan to see that GDP per capita is leaving out something important.? At the beginning of his Presidential campaign in 1968, Senator Robert Kennedy said the GDP?

"...does not allow for the health of our children, the quality of their education or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages ? it measures everything in short, except that which makes life worthwhile."

It is tempting to think of ?The Happy Entrepreneur? as a risk taker who has put up big numbers.? Perhaps the definition should be revised to look more like this;

entrepreneur [ahn-truh-pruh-noor] noun; an enterprising individual who builds happiness through risk and initiative, accepting full responsibility for the outcome.

As citizens of this great country we are entitled, in fact we are expected, to pursue happiness. ?Soon the Federal Government will be telling us exactly how happy we really are.? Once that happens, things are bound to get better.

Don?t worry.

Dell OptiPlex 9010 Small Form Factor

  • Pros Tools not required to open chassis and swap components. Solid multimedia performance.
  • Cons Cramped interior. USB 3.0 ports aren't color-coded.
  • Bottom Line With an easily accessible, IT-friendly chassis that can pop open without any tools, the Dell OptiPlex 9010 Small Form-Factor is a solid choice for businesses looking to save space without necessarily compromising performance, though more nimble systems in the same price range are readily available.
By Ahmer Kazi As its name suggests, the Dell OptiPlex 9010 Small Form Factor (9010 SFF) ($1,618 direct) falls toward the smaller side of Dell's OptiPlex 9010 commercial desktop lineup, landing between the Ultra Small Form-Factor and the full-tower desktop models. Despite its compact size, though, it packs solid hardware into an IT-friendly system that doesn't require any tools to open the chassis or swap components. For businesses looking to preserve space without necessarily compromising performance, it's a good option. That said, it's fairly pricey, and both similarly sized systems and better performers are readily available.

Design and Features
The 9010 SFF is housed in a compact chassis that measures 11.4 by 3.7 by 12.3 inches (HWD). Overall, it's not nearly as small as either the Polywell Poly i1000A-3770T or the Alienware X51 , but those systems are arguably too small, as neither can accommodate any internal expansion whatsoever. The 9010 SFF can be positioned vertically or horizontally, as demonstrated by the four rubber feet on its right side. The left side of the chassis, meanwhile, can easily be removed by pulling on the built-in handle?a convenient feature that lets your IT staff open the system up and swap out components without any tools.

The front panel is primarily covered by a gray plastic grille and features a slot-loading DVD burner, a pair of USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, and headphone and microphone jacks. The rear sports even more USB ports, with a pair of USB 3.0 ports alongside four USB 2.0 ports. Additionally, there's an RJ-45 port, a VGA port, three DisplayPorts, and two PS/2 ports. It's a healthy serving of ports, though it's worth nothing that two of the USB ports will be occupied by the included wired mouse and keyboard. On a related note, the 9010 SFF's USB 3.0 ports don't sport the familiar blue that's typically used to distinguish speedier USB 3.0 ports from their slower USB 2.0 counterparts. Instead, Dell has opted to place a barely noticeable "SS" (Super Speed) insignia above the USB 3.0 ports; it's not a major design flaw by any measure, but it will require your IT staff to do an extra bit of squinting when plugging in USB 3.0 peripherals.

As mentioned earlier, the real draw of the 9010 SFF is its ability to be upgraded and maintained without the use of any tools. Simply pull the handle on the left side of the chassis and you'll be greeted with an easily accessible?though densely packed?arrangement of hardware accented by easy-to-see light blue handles and grip points. Sliding out the optical drive allows for access to the 3.5-inch 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD that's encased in a metallic bay, which one removes by pulling on a circular blue lever. Removing the HDD reveals four DIMM slots on the 9010 SFF's motherboard, two of which are occupied by 4GB DDR3 SDRAM. Beneath the discrete 1GB AMD Radeon HD 7470 card is an empty half-height PCIe x16 slot, which can be outfitted with something along the lines of a low-powered graphics card or a WLAN 802.11n card after you swing out a plastic hinge that, in turn, allows you to pop out the metallic grille locked into the chassis. Overall, the 9010 SFF is remarkably easy to service and maintain despite its somewhat cramped interior.

Performance
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF

The 9010 SFF performed admirably against other small form-factor desktops, though it was handily outclassed by the larger enterprise-class HP Z220 CMT Workstation nearly across the board. Its PCMark 7 score of 2,980 landed at the bottom of the pack, coming within striking distance of the Alienware X51 (3,055 points) but trailed the rest of its peers, including the Shuttle X6100 (4,514 points). On the other hand, the 9010 SFF led the pack in our multimedia benchmark tests. It completed our Handbrake video encoding test in a brief 1 minute 4 seconds, edging past both the HP Z220 (1:05) and the Poly i1000A-3770T (1:11) by a thin margin. Likewise, it completed our Photoshop CS5 in 2 minutes 48 seconds, breezing past the Shuttle X6100 (3:00) and the Alienware X51 (3:36) without breaking a sweat. And while the 9010 SFF's Cinebench R11.5 score of 7.48 points fell a little short of the HP Z220 (7.55), it nonetheless muscled past the rest of the group, especially the Shuttle X6100 (5.68) as well as the Alienware X51 (4.91).

Despite its discrete 1GB AMD Radeon HP 7470 GPU, the 9010 SFF had difficulty breaching the 30 frames per second (fps) playability barrier in our gaming tests. To nobody's surprise, the X51 dominated the group in this arena, leaving the rest of the group gasping for air. In our Crysis benchmark tests, the 9010 SFF's performance (40 frames per second or fps in medium quality at 1,280-by-720 resolution; 4fps in high quality at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution) fell way below that of other systems, especially the HP Z220 (84fps and 11fps, respectively) and, to a more pronounced extent, the class-leading X51 (88fps and 22fps, respectively). Similarly, the 9010 SFF struggled in our Lost Planet 2 benchmark tests (16fps in middle quality at 1,280-by-720 resolution; 4fps in high quality at 1,920-by-1,080 resolution), missing the Poly i1000A-3770T by a narrow margin (18fps and 5fps, respectively) while, once again, being thoroughly outgunned by the X51 (86fps and 35fps, respectively). As far as 3D rendering goes, the 9010 SFF's 3DMark 11 scores (1,094 in Entry mode, 185 in Extreme mode) came close to that of the Poly i1000A-3770T (1,200 and 201, respectively), but, unsurprisingly, fell below both the HP Z220 (3,097 and 570, respectively) and the Alienware X51 (5,184 and 1,059, respectively).

Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF

Overall, the Dell OptiPlex 9010 Small Form-Factor is a good system whose shortcomings are tempered by its remarkable accessibility and expandability despite its compact profile. It doesn't perform with unbridled power like some of its peers, but its IT-friendly design makes it an appealing choice for businesses. Still, its high price tag is difficult to justify in the face of more nimble competitors, and, moreover, businesses that are purely interested in sheer computing power would be better off with our current Editors' Choice for single-processor workstations, the HP Z220 CMT Workstation.

Deadline latest weapon in EADS-BAE merger talks

PARIS (Reuters) - Europe's EADS rejected calls on Thursday to allow extra time for negotiations over a $45 billion merger with BAE Systems , as brinkmanship looked set to play a key role in politically complex plans to create a new defense giant.

Fabrice Bregier, head of the Airbus planemaker unit and part of the inner circle running Franco-German-Spanish EADS, was quoted as saying it was crucial to stick to the date set by UK regulators under rules designed to protect investors.

"The importance is that opinions converge. The October 10 deadline may seem soon but it is absolutely necessary given the environment," Bregier told the French daily Les Echos in an interview to be published on Friday.

EADS and BAE are in talks to create what would be the world's largest defense company. But their efforts have become snagged on differences over control between France and Germany while there are also political concerns about jobs.

German Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere joined France in pressing the companies to seek an extension of the UK deadline in order to give politicians more room to bridge differences.

"Perhaps we need more time. It depends on the answers for our questions and so I think we need more time," de Maiziere told reporters at a meeting in Cyprus.

France and Germany want to safeguard their influence over EADS while special arrangements will be needed to ringfence sensitive operations, including work BAE does in the United States and on Britain's nuclear submarines.

In the past two weeks, investors uncertain about the deal have stripped 4 billion euros from the value of EADS, illustrating the risk Chief Executive Tom Enders could face if he agrees to expose the stock to a further month of negotiation.

BAE shares have also shed their initial gains and analysts warn they may struggle to carry investors with them beyond October 10 if the talks show no signs of progress.

Yet with two weeks left, EADS and BAE have little incentive to seek an extension to the deadline.

Softening the deadline would ease pressure on Europe's politicians to come to an agreement acceptable to the companies while placating U.S. and UK fears of political interference.

For these reasons, experts say a bid for an immediate extension is unlikely unless there is progress. But if there is stalemate running up to the deadline, leaders of both companies could play hardball and decide to abandon the plan.

"It's normal that different points of view are expressed. Especially in an operation where states have strategic interests to preserve," Bregier told Les Echos.

"This kind of operation requires rapid decisions and it's not EADS or BAE management pushing, it's the markets and the clients, who want to know what the future of the group will be," he said adding that the current merger plan included guarantees to the United States covering its security concerns.

INFLUENCE AND TRADE-OFFS

The merger to create the world's biggest defense and aerospace company would dilute the influence of the French, German and Spanish governments in the company, prompting negotiations over their roles in the future.

German reservations include how to safeguard jobs and protect the merged firm from any future hostile takeover, a government document obtained by Reuters on Monday showed.

On Wednesday, a French government source said France would want to retain certain rights, as well.

EADS is standing firm, reiterating its "intention and current expectation" to provide further clarity by that date.

Technically, extensions to the UK stock market deadline are relatively simple and are usually granted, lawyers say.

Yet in classic European negotiating style, as seen on issues from farm subsidies to national bailouts, talks generally go down to the wire.

Raising the threat of a missed deadline, or demanding it be kept, is a tried and tested tactic in the brinkmanship so often seen among the 27 nations of the European Union.

De Maiziere called talks with his British and French counterparts on Wednesday evening "constructive".

"This is a complex situation, there are a lot of questions and conditions, nothing has (been) decided yet ... We will keep in contact," he said.

European governments all face severe spending pressures, but a stand-off between France and Germany over control of EADS is seen as the bigger roadblock, rekindling a climate of mistrust which set in during management rows from 2005 onwards.

France holds a 15 percent stake in EADS and wants to retain its right to influence group strategy. Spain owns 5 percent.

Germany is not a direct shareholder but sees the transaction as a chance to enlarge its influence. At the same time, EADS and BAE are pressing for less political influence.

Airbus's Bregier said he did not see the issue of German state participation being an issue in the talks and did not see any reason why measures could not be taken to ensure a balance with France, whose government would end up with a 9 percent share in the new group as plans stand today.

Signs of discord first emerged at the weekend when Reuters reported that France appeared to rebuff German proposals for a common position [ID:nL5E8KLN1G].

EADS and BAE have said they will offer the governments of France, Germany and Britain a "special share" in the new company, allowing them to block any future hostile takeover, but are determined to prevent any meddling in management decisions.

Goodell 'sorry' for ref fiasco? |? Owners avoid blame

Philadelphia Eagles v Arizona CardinalsGetty Images

With the Eagles at 2-1 but feeling like a team that can?t get out of its way, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said Thursday that he hopes quarterback Mike Vick will do more to stay out of the way of defensive players.

?Maybe he needs to move,? Mornhinweg told the media.? ?About half of the time the quarterback needs to move.? It might be subtle or a slide.? It might be up and out, in a full scramble, front door or back door ? all these type of movements.?

Vick seemed to reach a new level two years ago because he was moving less.? Patient in the pocket, Vick waited for opportunities to develop.? This year, it seems like he?s simply waiting to get blasted by a blitzing linebacker.

The hits Vick has taken, coupled with his alarming turnover rate, has prompted calls for the team to spend more time running the ball, especially with LeSean McCoy on the roster.? Mornhinweg doesn?t sound sold on that approach.

?We go after people now,? Mornhinweg said regarding the possibility of making the running game a priority.? ?Look, I tell the players that we?re going to be aggressive.? Again, you can be aggressive in the running game or the pass, but we?re going to be aggressive.? I want them to be aggressive and want them to play without the fear of making a mistake. If you make a mistake, you find the solution and then you correct it fast.? Once you get that thing motoring pretty good, and I think we are closer than it appears, then you?re in pretty good shape both run and pass.

?Normally, many of your runs come in the second half, whether you are close, you are even, or you are up, and with us most of the time.? Not all of the time, but most of time.? Philosophically, I don?t care as much about balance in any particular game.? If we have to run the ball 50 times to win the game, that?s what we?ll do.? If we need to pass the ball 50 times in any particular game, that?s what we?ll do.? Now, you take the whole season and you?d rather be somewhere around 60-40ish, usually a little higher than 60ish maybe 60-65 percent pass.?

It sounds good in theory, but every pass play lately has had Eagles fans holding their breath for the next hit on Mike Vick.? Sooner or later, he?ll absorb a hit that keeps him from continuing.

alexburke You are in between paths just like you said.
I see the paths being basically EVEN but one has a higher cost.
The one with higher cost gets you there faster, but not always a wise
choice because the other doesn't take you much longer and there NO
NEED to rush anything. Eventually everything comes at the end of the path
there's say a "package" waiting. Both paths give the same package.
its how your choosing the decision of what route to take.

My advise is go with the PATH or ROUTE that is a little longer.
Who cares right.. your eventually get there. Its all about
learning to enjoy the trip on that path.

You could be taking the long way, and not like it maybe even wish
you took the faster route. Truth is its not the path
you choice ITS THE WAY YOU CHOOSE To experience it.

I will say with certainty that at the end of both paths is a comfortable
life.
Take the longer path if you can enjoy the ride and want to make a commitment
to that.
Take the shorter ride if you want to just get it over with.

Girl's Fund for Sick Pets Has Renewed Meaning - Fox 4

Posted on: 9:45 pm, September 25, 2012, by Abby Eden, updated on: 10:35pm, September 25, 2012

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. ? Finding the money to pay for a pet?s emergency surgery is often the furthest thing from people?s minds, but when furry family members get hurt or sick, it?s hard for many to imagine not helping them.? However, many families have to face those decisions every day.? Can we afford to save our pet or do we have to say goodbye?

One seven year-old girl wants to make that decision easier.

Sydney Riley met Nutmeg at an animal hospital.? Her job was just to provide love for new puppies.? One showed an interest in return.

?She came up to me and sat in my lap.? She was the first one to do that.? That?s why I liked her so much, and she was cute,? Sydney said of her dog, Nutmeg.

Months after Nutmeg became part of the family she became very sick.

?Sometimes I was afraid she might die,? Sydney said.

?We took her in, they did an X-ray, and they said your dog needs surgery,? Amanda Riley, Sydney?s Mom said.

If Nutmeg didn?t have surgery, she?d die.

?We were obviously very concerned about her and also wondering how in the world we would come up with the money,? Amanda explained.

After scrambling to get enough, the money came through, but days later, Nutmeg needed another surgery.

?There was a period of about 20 minutes where we weren?t sure if we were going to be able to pull it off,? Amanda said.

Once again, Nutmeg was able to have life-saving surgery, but both surgeries were about ten thousand dollars.

She?s never had a sick pet before, but Sydney?s been collecting money for two years to help families who can?t afford emergency procedures for their pets, her fund is called Sydney?s S.H.A.R.E.

Nutmeg?s doctor says funds like Sydney?s S.H.A.R.E. are literally life-savers.

?She?s just an amazing, amazing girl that I think is gonna do great things,? said Dr. Kara Forsee from Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners.

Sydney now knows first-hand how much her cause helps others.

?I feel good that I am helping other families so that they don?t have to go through what we had to,? she said.

Each year she?s collected more than 400 dollars for families in need, and hopes to raise even more.

Nutmeg still isn?t out of the woods, for the next week or so, she still risks having deadly complications.

If you want to find out how you can help Sydney?s S.H.A.R.E., click this link.? Click this link to find other organizations that provide funds for emergency pet health care.

Metal prices follow stocks lower

NEW YORK (AP) ? The prices of gold, most other metals and crude oil fell Wednesday, following the stock market down, as unrest grew in Europe and uncertainty lingered about the world economy.

Gold for December delivery fell $12.80 an ounce to finish at $1,753.60 an ounce. Gold has pulled back this week after a summer-long rally took it from about $1,550 an ounce to almost $1,800 an ounce on expectations that stimulus measures would be imposed in Europe and the U.S. to help boost economic growth.

Benchmark crude fell below $90 as protests raged in Greece and Spain over spending cuts and tax increases designed to resolve a debt crisis. Oil finished the day at $89.98 per barrel, down $1.39.

Police fired tear gas at rioters hurling gasoline bombs and chunks of marble during Greece's largest anti-austerity demonstration in six months. At least 38 people were arrested and 64 injured in protests in Spain.

The protests in Europe shattered a relative calm and raised investor fears that the region still does not have control of its three-year-old debt crisis, despite a bold plan by the European Central Bank to buy bonds of indebted countries.

The unrest in Europe led traders to abandon risky assets, said Sterling Smith, a futures specialist with Citi in Chicago.

With U.S. economic figures "mixed at best," he said, global economic concerns are also taking a toll, and what he called the "half-life" of the Federal Reserve's latest efforts to help the economy is getting shorter.

In other metals trading, silver for December delivery dropped 0.8 cent to $33.94 an ounce and December copper fell 4.85 cents to $3.71 per pound. Palladium fell $15 to $625.85 per ounce.

Platinum for October delivery rose $2.60 to $1,634.40 per ounce. Disruptions to South Africa's mining sector, where miners have been striking for weeks, worsened. South Africa produces 75 percent of the world's platinum.

In energy trading, heating oil fell 0.18 cent to $3.1068 per gallon, wholesale gasoline rose 11.4 cents to $3.0811 per gallon and natural gas rose 9.9 cents to $3.023 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Key agricultural contracts finished the day lower. December wheat fell 17.25 cents to $8.6925 per bushel, December corn fell 19 cents to $7.2475 per bushel and November soybeans fell 38.5 cents to $15.73 per bushel.

You may want to see who the employers are in your city. Or you may want to see where people you know work. Or you may know that you want to work for a small company. You can filter your search by one or many of these criteria to find potential employers (aka target companies).

Following Companies

You?ve developed a list of target companies. These are places you would like to work or at least you think you may. These are not necessarily companies that are posting jobs at this time. This list is any company that could potentially hire you because they have positions you could do!

With your list in hand, follow these companies!

Part of your regular routine is to monitor the updates of companies you are following. This is easily done by clicking on the ?company? tab on your home page of LinkedIn.

Now that you are following companies, LinkedIn is smart enough to suggest other companies you may want to follow. This is similar to the function you have seen with recommendations of people to connect with.

Company Research

See who you are connected to (or should be connected to) in the companies you are following. LinkedIn makes this easy to do. When you look at the company profile, it shows you who you are connected to who works there!

Check out the company?s tabs. They will have Employee Insights, and maybe even products/services and Careers tabs.

You can also see a list of companies viewed by other LinkedIn users. It says: ?viewers also viewed:? Chances are, the companies listed there are competitors or similar. See if you should add them to your growing target list! Then, follow them too! If you want to be extra sleuthy, you can see where employees used to work and where they went after. Again, more potential targets for you!

Now What?

Your mission now, should you choose to accept it is to make personal contact with people who work inside your target companies and schedule an informational meeting! You are seeking information about what is going on within the company. Your secondary mission is to get to know the person and have them get to know you so that when they have a job, you are the person they will call before it gets advertised!

Opportunities?Not Jobs

I have purposely NOT discussed the ?Job? search functionality within LinkedIn. Searching for posted jobs certainly is possible and something you can do on LinkedIn. I am pretty sure you can figure this out. Tapping into the hidden job market is a proactive approach to finding your next job. Give it a try! See what new companies you can add to your target list and begin following for potential opportunities!

Are there other tricks or creative ways you are harnessing the power and accessing the data from LinkedIn? Leave a comment! Inquiring minds want to know!
