The new supervirus, which Kaspersky discovered and named "Flame," is one of the most complex items of malicious software ever conceived ? many times more sophisticated than the notorious Stuxnet worm ? and could well be a purposeful "cyberweapon" directed against Iran, the firm said?in a statement?late yesterday.

Flame is "actively being used as a cyberweapon attacking entities in several countries," Kaspersky said in a statement. It is "one of the most advanced and complete attack-toolkits ever discovered.? The complexity and functionality of the newly discovered malicious program exceed those of all other cyber menaces known to date."

?According to Kaspersky, the majority of infected computers are in Iran, followed by the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. It said the virus has probably been active for at least two years, but has not been detected until now due to its "extreme complexity."

"Over recent years the danger of military operations in Cyberspace has been one of the most serious issues of information safety," Yevgeny Kaspersky, the firm's director, is quoted as saying in the statement. "Stuxnet and Duqu were parts of one circuit of cyber attacks; their application raised concerns of a potential unleashing of global cyber war. Harmful Flame, most likely, is next stage of that war. It is important to understand, that this cyberweapon can be easily turned against any state."

The firm said it found the virus accidentally, after it was hired by the United Nations' International Telecommunications Agency to trace the source of unexplained glitches and deletions of sensitive information in the agency's Middle East operations. A spokesman for Kaspersky told journalists yesterday that the virus' creator "remains unknown," but it is probably a government, not only because of its huge size and complexity, but also because it does not appear to be designed to steal bank account information or perform the sorts of tasks usually set by private criminal hackers.

Stuxnet, which reportedly?wreaked havoc on Iran's nuclear program, was designed to disrupt and destroy sensitive industrial systems. The new virus, which Kaspersky admits it does not yet fully understand, appears to evade detection, bury itself deep, and continue siphoning off vital data for years.

Iran's official Maher Labs, a division of Iran's telecommunications ministry,?said on its website today?that "tools to recognize and clean this malware have been developed and, as of today, they will be available for those [Iranian] organizations and companies who want it."

Among the key characteristics of the virus, Maher said, are "distribution via removable medias and local networks, network sniffing, detecting network resources and collecting lists of vulnerable passwords, scanning the disk of infected system looking for specific extensions and contents, creating series of user?s screen captures when some specific processes or windows are active, transferring saved data to control servers, and bypassing tens of known antiviruses, anti malware and other security software."

The virus can infect computers running any Windows-based operating system, it said.

"We can clean this virus now, but we are still analyzing and discovering what it's capable of," says Vitaly Kamluk, chief malware expert at Kaspersky. "It took years to detect and understand Duqu and Stuxnet. These were highly profesional tools that evaded us for a long time. Flame is the newest, but there's no doubt that worse things may be out there. You can count on it."

Hamels tops Mets for 8th straight win

NEW YORK (AP) - Ty Wigginton helped Cole Hamels keep the Philadelphia Phillies rolling a day after they faced another injury to a critical player.

With Roy Halladay's status still uncertain, Wigginton drove in a career-high six runs with a homer and a pair of two-out hits and Hamels won his eighth straight decision as Philadelphia beat the New York Mets 8-4 Monday.

"You know when you miss someone like Halladay, you're missing him, but there's nothing you can do about it," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "It might get hard, but we're definitely not going to fold tent. We're going to try to outplay everybody."

Halladay was pulled Sunday after two innings because of shoulder soreness. The Phillies say they will send the right-hander to see a doctor on Tuesday. The two-time Cy Young winner is 1-3 in his last five starts.

Hamels (8-1) pitched well enough to match St. Louis' Lance Lynn for the major league lead in wins. He said he did not place any extra pressure on himself because of Halladay's situation.

"We're not going to put any added stress on what we have to do," Hamels said.

Hamels struck out six and allowed seven hits in eight innings to help the Phillies win for the fifth time in six games following a season-long four-game losing streak.

"He came in after the loss yesterday and did it again," Wigginton said. "Cole's been stepping up all year and he did it again today."

Scott Hairston and Vinny Rottino each hit tying two-run homers for the Mets, who had a three-game winning streak end.

"It was one of those days when they got better pitching and their bats were a little hotter," David Wright said.

Down 5-4, the Mets threatened in the eighth when pinch-hitter Andres Torres doubled. With one out and Torres on third, Daniel Murphy grounded out and then Wright also grounded out to end the inning. Wright has gone hitless in his last 14 at-bats, dropping his average to .373.

"David showed he's human, he can fall into a little funk just like everyone else," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "He's been so good for so long that you come to expect that he's always going to get a hit and we know that's not going to be the case."

Hamels said facing Wright took everything he had left. He finally retired the Mets star on a changeup, a pitch he hadn't intended to throw during the at-bat.

"If I would have thrown that any time earlier, I think he would have crushed it," Hamels said. "There's a reason he's hitting .380 or whatever. He's definitely a lot better hitter than the last couple of years."

Bobby Parnell (1-1) gave up a leadoff single to Jimmy Rollins in the seventh and Wigginton, who played for the Mets from 2002-2004, singled him home two outs later for a 5-4 lead.

Wigginton added a no-doubt, three-run homer to left in the ninth off Manny Acosta to blow open a close game and cap a day in which he went 3 for 3 with two walks. Wigginton also had a two-run double in the third.

"He had a big day today," Manuel said. "Did all the hittin' for us."

John Mayberry put the Phillies up 4-2 with a long home run to left field after Wigginton walked to lead off the sixth. It was the second and last hit Jonathon Niese gave up.

Niese left before any more damage could be done, having walked five and allowed four earned runs in five-plus innings while throwing 115 pitches on a sticky day. Mets pitchers had combined for 28 scoreless innings before the Phillies scored.

In the Mets third, Justin Turner got a two-out hit of his own, then sprained his ankle in a rundown.

Rob Johnson was held up at third when Philadelphia right fielder Pence fired home, and Turner tried to take second. Catcher Brian Schneider threw to second baseman Freddy Galvis to start the rundown, and shortstop Jimmy Rollins chased Turner back to first.

Turner lunged for the bag and tumbled into foul territory behind the base, where he writhed in pain as Mets staff came out to assist him. After about a minute, he was assisted off the field.

Wright moved to shortstop from third base, playing the position for the second time in his major league career. He played there in the eighth and ninth innings last Aug. 7, when Jose Reyes and Daniel Murphy were hurt in a game. In the fifth inning Monday, Wright went to his left to scoop a grounder and threw sharply to first, prompting cheers.

"Moving to a new position, you kind of have to go through everything in your mind like checkpoints. If the ball's hit here, I have to do this, and if the ball's hit there, I have to do that," Wright said. "I have to worry about base stealers, double plays, things I would not ordinarily have to worry about at third base."

Former NFL Player Jamal Lewis Files for Bankruptcy

Those statistics about former NFL players going broke years after retirement come in to play once again. The latest statistic is retired? NFL star Jamal Lewis ? who helped the Baltimore Ravens win the Super Bowl in 2001 ? has filed for bankruptcy, claiming he?s in too deep and can?t pay his eight-figure debt.

Jamal filed the Chapter 11 papers in Atlanta ? according to the docs, he?s got $14,455,854 in assets but he?s racked up a whopping $10,566,764.18 in debts.

Among his creditors ? Bank Of America has a lien for $947,876, Benz has one for 113k, Chrysler for 15k ? and the list goes on.

As for his assets ? Jamal?s got five homes, a bunch of expensive cars, a $500,000 401(k), and 50% ownership in Fort Rapids Indoor Waterpark in Columbus, OH (worth about $6 mil).

According to the docs, Jamal is self-employed and earns approximately $35,000 a month.

By filing Chapter 11 Jamal can keep most of what he?s got, while negotiating reduced and extended payments to creditors according to TMZ.

Will 'Amour' conquer all in Cannes prize race?

CANNES, France (AP) ? Love is in the air at the Cannes Film Festival, as the jury sits down Sunday to choose its prizewinners.

There's love in the face of death in Michael Haneke's "Amour," love in conflict with faith in Christian Mungiu's "Beyond the Hills" and love against the odds in Jacques Audiard's "Rust and Bone" ? three favorites to take the top prize, the Palme d'Or.

The jury, which is led by Italian director Nanni Moretti and includes actors Ewan McGregor and Diane Kruger, director Alexander Payne and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, will announce the prize winners at a ceremony later.

For filmmakers, it means a frustrating wait. Directors and actors getting prizes are tipped off that they should show up to the ceremony, but are not told what they have won.

"We knew we would have an award, we didn't know what, which one," said Laurent Cantet, who won the top prize in 2008 for "The Class."

"You wait and wait and wait. At the end there is only one left but the Palme d'Or."

This year, critics and bookmakers put Haneke out in front with the tightly controlled but deeply felt "Amour." The Austrian director won the Palme three years ago for "The White Ribbon."

Three other previous winners are in the competition ? Romania's Mungiu, Britain's Ken Loach, with whisky-tasting comedy "The Angels' Share," and Iran's Abbas Kiarostami with the Tokyo-set "Like Someone in Love."

The 65th Cannes Film Festival has seen plenty of glamour, with the likes of Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart appearing both on-screen and on the red carpet.

But in the movies, weighty themes dominated as the French Riviera froth was subdued by several days of unseasonable rain and cold.

Other contenders in what's considered a strong lineup of 22 films ? if one lacking in surprises ? include Thomas Vinterberg's Danish witch hunt drama "The Hunt" and Ukrainian Sergei Loznitsa's bleak wartime drama "In the Fog."

The nine jurors will pick the recipients of the Palme d'Or, the second-place Grand Prize and the third-place Jury Prize, as well as male and female acting winners.

The jury could choose to reward Hollywood royalty. Pitt plays a cynical mob enforcer in Andrew Dominik's "Killing Them Softly" ? one of a handful of Cannes films examining the soul of America ? and Kidman is unrecognizable as a Southern femme fatale in Lee Daniels' "The Paperboy."

Other powerful performances include Marion Cotillard's tragedy-struck killer-whale trainer in "Rust and Bone," Mads Mikkelsen's hunted Dane in "The Hunt," newcomer Paul Brannigan's scrappy Glasgow lad in "The Angels' Share" and Denis Lavant, as a performer who takes on a host of bizarre personas in "Holy Motors."

There's strong sentiment in favor of Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuel Riva ? two French film legends, both in their 80s ? as an elderly couple facing death in "Amour."

If past festivals have proved anything, it's that predictions are impossible.

This year's wild card is French filmmaker Leos Carax's "Holy Motors," a film so strange and unpredictable it prompted one journalist to ask the director: "is there a French word for bonkers?"

It was greeted at its press screening with whoops and wild cheers, as well as scattered boos.

The wild reception shows how unpredictable and disorienting Cannes can be.

Director Daniels said he was astonished to learn films routinely get booed at Cannes. There was a smattering of boos at the "The Paperboy" press screening ? and a 16-minute standing ovation at the gala premiere that evening.

"I'm still confused by it all," the director said ? but, he said, it's an exciting confusion.

"It's terribly humbling to be here, and terrifying at the same time, because you want to deliver."

Florida men's tennis coach Andy Jackson resigns

While the Florida women?s tennis team celebrates consecutive national championships, the men?s program is being rebuilt.

Florida announced the resignation of coach Andy Jackson on Friday afternoon. The 50-year-old Jackson compiled a 209-82 record in 11 seasons with the Gators.

He led UF to Southeastern Conference championships in 2003 and 2005 and a pair of SEC tournament titles (2005, 2011).

The Gators went 16-9 this past season with a 7-4 conference record. Florida was eliminated in the NCAA Tournament during the round of 16 by Ohio State.

UF stated that the search to find Jackson?s replacement will begin immediately.

Apple releases updated iOS 5.1.1 build for GSM/AT&T iPhone 4

Apple has released an updated build 9B208 of iOS 5.1.1 just for your handset.

There doesn?t appear to be any information from Apple on what triggered the new build, though it?s possible some very specific bug or glitch was identified and fixed. If it was incredibly minor, Apple would likely just have filed it away for next time. If it was incredibly major, Apple would likely have pushed it out as new update to ensure every user got it.

As it is, if you?ve already updated to iOS 5.1.1 you won?t see the new version popup as an over-the-air (OTA) update, or as available in iTunes. If you haven?t already updated, you?ll be offered this new version when you do. To force an update from the previous iOS 5.1.1 build to this one, you?ll have to restore to it in iTunes. (And really, there?s almost certainly no reason to do that.)

iOS 5.1.1 was originally released on Monday, May 7. As of May 15, almost 74% of iMore readers had already updated to iOS 5.1.1. Today, one of the major reasons many had waited, an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1, was released.
