Top Search Engine PPC Platforms - Online Media Magic

The most popular search engine PPC program is Google AdWords which reaches over 10 billion web pages and 100 different language versions. The benefits of using Google are its inexpensive start-up cost ($5 dollars) and the amount of traffic you will get, which is far more than that of any of the other search engines. Google also provides you with its Google Analytics program, which helps you with what keywords you should be targeting in your PPC ads, a website optimizer, which allows you to test different variations of your web pages to see which convert better, and step-by-step tutorials that take you through the whole process of setting up a Google Adwords campaign. Most experts agree that it is a good idea to start out with Google Adwords, because of the low start-up fee and the heavy traffic. Although it is expensive for competitive terms, you can still get away with not bidding too much on the less competitive longer-tailed keywords. According to thesearchguru blog, on the Internet, organic search drives 75%+ of all search traffic and papy per click receives less than 25% of all search traffic; yet pay per click earns 80%+ of search engine marketing campaign budgets.

The Yahoo Search Marketing search engine PPC platform was first named as GoTo, then changed to Overture, and finally ended up as what we know it today: Yahoo Search Marketing. Yahoo charges a $30 start-up fee, but then offers you $25 of free ads. Yahoo focuses on sponsored Search and reaches over 80% of active Internet users. You can also reach your market through online publishers, newsletters and emails. Instead of your ad appearing only in search rankings, it will also show up next to content like articles and product reviews that are related to your business. You can also reach a local audience by targeting ads specifically for your geographical area. Yahoo also offers certain upgrades like the Search Optimizer, which can automatically manage your keyword bids, and the Marketing Console, which tracks how effective your online campaigns are. Each of these are available for a monthly fee. Free tools include: the Keyword Selector Tool and the View Bids Tool, as well as a PPC ROI calculator and CPM ROI Calculator.

Microsoft adCenter (Bing) is relatively new in the big names of search engine PPC. Yet, it is very popular since it offers a large range of features: costs only $5 to sign up,targeted towards a buying market where the competition is not as high as Google and Yahoo, and so the amount you pay per click is lower. You can take advantage of the keyword research tool, which gives you the past month?s searches for your keyword, other relevant keywords, and the present month?s traffic for those keywords. The tool also shows trends for each keyword.

It is generally recommended that, if you are new to PPC, you start with just one search engine (preferably Google Adwords), learn how that works, and then move on to others if you feel that it might be worth a try. In recent studies done by payperclickuniverse, there are over 500 PPC search engines operating at this time, (Google Adwords, Microsoft Adcenter, and Yahoo) are the most popular that produce over 85% of all the Pay Per Click searches.

Spain mobile operators jointly launch WhatsApp challenger

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's three biggest mobile operators are teaming up to launch a service they hope will help them better compete with the likes of WhatsApp, Viber and Skype, which are luring customers with the promise of free phone calls and messages.

The Joyn service from Telefonica's Movistar, France Telecom's Orange and Vodafone will offer free messaging, enhanced call features and in some cases free calls.

The move comes amid a sharp fall in the number of paid-for text messages sent in recession-hit Spain, where the unemployment rate stands at one in four and where WhatsApp is the best-selling application on Apple Inc's App Store.

The service has become so well known that the local government on the southern island of Tenerife has said officials should use the application to cut mobile bills.

Joyn, which allows users to send video and pictures while on a smart phone, is available for Android phones and will shortly launch for Apple's iPhone.

More telecoms companies in Spain and globally are expected to offer the service, which will be implemented across operators in Germany later this year and in several European countries in 2013.

"This is the beginning of something that will cross most operators in most countries," said Graham Trickey, senior projects director at telecoms organization GSMA.

Telefonica and Vodafone have lost hundreds of thousands of clients in Spain this year since they stopped subsiding smartphones, a policy Vodafone recently reversed.

Cash-strapped consumers are spending less on traditional telecom services, a boon to Internet-based services like WhatsApp and Skype.

The number of paid-for text messages sent in Spain dropped to 1.5 billion in the second quarter of 2012, from 1.9 billion in the same period the year before, according to the country's telecoms regulator.

Operators are keen to maintain customer loyalty, even if they are not making money from them. And Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange could charge for some Joyn services in future.

"It's possible that in the future we could launch new added-value services that could be paid for, for example better quality videocalls," a spokeswoman for Orange Spain said.

Sutter agrees to donate Warrack Hospital campus to youth services ...

SANTA ROSA ? Social Advocates for Youth announced that Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa has offered the Warrack Hospital campus as a donation, a development that would allow the nonprofit to increase its capacity nearly five-fold while adding a number of new services.

Should the the nonprofit ? better known as SAY ? finalize critical details of the proposal, it would then begin to raise funds from grants, government sources and community donations to establish a ?Youth Opportunity Center.? It would aim to provide youth in Sonoma County with a host of services ranging from counseling, employment and job skills training, transitional housing for former foster children, emergency shelter and other community programs.

It?s too soon to say exactly how much money will need to be raised, pending the completion cost estimates for renovations by Santa Rosa-based Wright Contracting, said Matt Martin, executive director of SAY. Additionally, the nonprofit is currently evaluating any potential increase to its operating budget, which in 2011 was $3.2 million, to support new programs.

?We are honored (Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa) wants to support SAY?s efforts to reach more of Sonoma County?s youth and children in crisis with our services and programs,? Mr. Martin said in announcing the planned donation, adding that it ?would be a great start in bringing our dream of establishing a center where, for generations to come, teens and vulnerable 18-24 year-old ( can heal, grow, and find hope into reality.?

The Warrack campus opened in 1960 as a 69-bed acute-care facility. Sutter Health acquired the hospital, located at Hoen Avenue and Summerfield Road, back in 2001 but de-licensed it in 2006, ending acute care operations ?due to lack of community need.?

The campus since then has been used for a number of other services, including its workforce health offices and certain labs, but Sutter has long been looking for a better fit for the building. Only 25 percent of the campus was occupied.

?We learned of SAY?s vision to create a Sonoma County Youth Opportunity Center and knew this was the right fit and best use for the building?s unique configuration,? Mike Purvis, chief administration officer of Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa, said in a statement.? ?(Sutter) offered to donate the building to SAY to preserve the location?s community service legacy.?

If the plans go forward, SAY would relocate from its existing 11,000-square-foot offices on Airway Drive in Santa Rosa to the Warrack Campus, where it would occupy roughly 52,000 square feet. Two programs run by SAY, the Dr. James E. Coffee House Teen Shelter and Tomayo Village, would remain in their current locations. The nonprofit anticipates completing its investigation of the building in early 2013.? Upon successful completion of that inspection, Sutter intends on remaining and would the east wing of the hospital back from SAY.

The nonprofit would also likely boost staffing levels, but an immediate number is not yet known, Mr. Martin said.?

In August, SAY?s Board of Directors? entered into a 180-day due diligence period with Sutter to investigate the condition of the building and identify all costs associated with remodeling the interior.

?SAY is evaluating our capacity to operate current programs while expanding into the Warrack Campus with the Youth Opportunity Center and including other nonprofits that provide complimentary services to children and youth,? said John Meislahn, SAY board president. SAY anticipates completing its investigation of the building in early 2013.

According to SAY, several local Sonoma County building industry leaders have donated their time to assist SAY in evaluating the facility, including Mark Davis of Wright Contracting, Jim Henderson Architect, Project Development Manager Bert Bangsberg, Don Watanabe, former Burbank Housing Project Manager, Steve Worthen of Interiors Inc., Civil Engineer Leroy Carlenzoli, and Zyromski-Konicek.

SAY was founded in 1971 and provides a variety of services including low-cost counseling, job training, educational support, emergency services, transitional housing and youth employment to former foster children and children age 5-24 and their families. It has 54 full-time employees and about 250 volunteers. About 78 percent of its operating budget comes from grants and another 18 percent from donations.

The Youth Opportunity Center could have significant impact on those in crisis, should the plans come to fruition, officials said.

?If we can come together, raise the funds needed and make this dream of a Youth Oppurtunity Center happen, we will change the future for hundreds of Sonoma County youth every year,? said Bill Friedman, SAY honorary board member.

Rice meeting with U.S. senators fails to dampen criticism

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice on Tuesday conceded that an early account she gave about the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, was partly inaccurate, but she failed to win over Republican senators who accused her of misleading the public.

Rice met for about an hour behind closed doors at the U.S. Capitol with Republican Senators John McCain, Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte, who have threatened to block her nomination if President Barack Obama chooses her for Secretary of State or another top post in his second-term Cabinet.

They have openly criticized her for initial comments after the September 11 attack in Benghazi that suggested it was a spontaneous event arising from protests over an anti-Islam film rather than a premeditated attack.

The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in the attack on the Benghazi mission and a nearby CIA annex. Intelligence officials later said the attack was possibly tied to al Qaeda affiliates.

"We are significantly troubled by many of the answers that we got, and some that we didn't get, concerning evidence that was overwhelming leading up to the attack on our consulate," McCain told reporters after the meeting.

"It is clear that the information that she gave the American people was incorrect when she said that it was a spontaneous demonstration triggered by a hateful video," he said.

"It was not, and there was compelling evidence at the time that that was certainly not the case, including statements by Libyans as well as other Americans who are fully aware that people don't bring mortars and rocket-propelled grenades to spontaneous demonstrations," McCain said.

Republicans have argued that the Obama administration tried to play down the terrorist angle in its initial comments to avoid undermining the president's claims of success in fighting al Qaeda in the run-up to the November 6 election.

Rice, who was accompanied by acting CIA Director Michael Morell, later issued a statement saying:

"We explained that the talking points provided by the intelligence community, and the initial assessment upon which they were based, were incorrect in a key respect: there was no protest or demonstration in Benghazi."

"While, we certainly wish that we had had perfect information just days after the terrorist attack, as is often the case, the intelligence assessment has evolved," she said.

"We stressed that neither I nor anyone else in the Administration intended to mislead the American people at any stage in this process."

'WAY TOO EARLY TO TELL'

Obama has defended Rice and said if senators have a problem with the administration's handling of Benghazi they should "go after me" rather than try to "besmirch her reputation."

Obama has also said if he believed Rice was the right person for a job in his administration, he would not hesitate to nominate her, throwing down the gauntlet to Republicans.

The White House has not given a timeframe for when the president might nominate Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's replacement. Clinton's aides have said she plans to step down around the inauguration, which is in late January, and would like to stay until her successor is confirmed.

Rice met in the afternoon with Senator Joseph Lieberman, the independent chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, and she will return to Capitol Hill on Wednesday to meet with the panel's top Republican, Senator Susan Collins.

Collins said it was "way too early to tell" if Rice could attract the 60 Senate votes needed to overcome any procedural obstacles if she is nominated, but that Rice had erred in being the administration's voice on Benghazi if she was interested in becoming secretary of state.

"The secretary of state is supposed to be above politics, and she played a very political role by appearing at the height of the political campaign, on those shows," Collins said.

Lieberman, after meeting Rice, said: "I specifically asked her whether at any point prior to going on those Sunday morning television shows she was briefed or urged to say certain things by anybody in the White House related to the campaign or political operations. She said 'no.'"

INTELLIGENCE CRITICIZED

Graham also criticized U.S. intelligence agencies that wrote the talking points on which Rice based her public comments.

"I'm very disappointed in our intelligence community. I think they failed in many ways. But with a little bit of inquiry and curiosity, I think it would be pretty clear that to explain this episode as related to a video that created a mob that turned into a riot was far afield," he said. "And at the end of the day, we're going to get to the bottom of this."

Rice's controversial Benghazi statements were based on a set of unclassified talking points prepared by U.S. intelligence agencies for members of Congress.

The initial draft written by the CIA referred to "attacks" carried out by "extremists with ties to al Qaeda." However by the time Rice received them, "attacks" had changed to "demonstrations" and "with ties to al Qaeda" had been deleted, multiple U.S. sources have said.

The White House has denied making those edits and members of Congress are trying to determine where the changes came from.

"The points clearly reflect the early indications of extremist involvement in a direct assault. It wasn't until after they were used in public that analysts reconciled contradictory information about how the assault began," a U.S. intelligence official said. "There was absolutely no intent to misinform."

The senators who met with Rice remained unconvinced by her responses and said her visit left them with greater concerns than before the meeting.

"I wouldn't vote for anybody being nominated out of the Benghazi debacle until I had answers about what happened that I don't have today," Graham said.

Asked whether he would block such a nomination, Graham replied: "Oh, absolutely. I would place a hold on anybody that wanted to be promoted for any job that had a role in the Benghazi situation."

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the questions about Rice's appearance on the talk shows and the talking points had been answered. "The focus on - some might say obsession on - comments made on Sunday shows seems to me and to many to be misplaced," he said.

Canadian PM's Conservatives hang on to Calgary seat

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservatives narrowly hung onto what had been considered one of their safest seats on Monday as voters elected their candidate in a by-election that became a contentious referendum on the government's policies.

In the electoral district of Calgary Centre, Conservative candidate Joan Crockatt, who had the support of the right wing of the party, was leading Liberal challenger Harvey Locke with 37.4 percent of the vote to 32.5 percent with most of the votes tallied.

The result in the Western Canadian district, headquarters of the country's oil industry and long the Conservatives' power base, would never have altered the balance of power in Ottawa, where Harper's party won a comfortable majority in the spring 2011 election.

But the race was much closer than early polls predicted. A loss to the Liberals would have been a shock, as that party has not won an election in the Alberta city since 1968. It would have forced the Harper Conservatives to rethink strategy in the next federal election in 2015 after years of focusing efforts on other parts of Canada where results have been far less certain.

Several national issues played out in the campaign in the district of 125,000 people in the city of 1.1 million. The controversial takeover bid for Nexen Inc by Chinese state-owned oil company CNOOC Ltd, the Conservatives' strong promotion of increased oil exports and the environmental impact of oil sands output.

Late in the race, Locke has been forced to deal with some anti-Alberta remarks by some of the party's national figures, including two-year-old barbs by leadership hopeful Justin Trudeau.

Locke and the third-place challenger, Chris Turner of the Green Party, are both known as environmentalists. It is clear they split the moderate and left-of-center vote, as Turner took 25.7 percent.

The race was one of three by-elections on Monday to fill vacant seats in the House of Commons. In Durham in Ontario, the Conservatives easily held their position, with Erin O'Toole taking more than half the vote.

In Victoria, British Columbia, the Green candidate had just a 1.3 percentage point lead over the federal opposition New Democratic Party with ballots from dozens of polls still to be counted. It has been an NDP holding.

Warner Bros. Extends Finance Deal With Village Roadshow ...

November 27, 2012 02:39:03 GMT
The film finance deal marks the highest profile business agreement WB has made amid tension on who's going to replace Barry Meyer as the studio's leader in 2013.

Warner Bros. Pictures has renewed its movie finance deal with longtime partner Village Roadshow Pictures. It was confirmed on Monday, November 26 that the Burbank studio had extended the business deal with the company it worked with since 1997 through the end of 2017. The previous contract had been set to expire in 2014.

Per L.A. Times, Village Roadshow has secured debt financing of more than $1.1 billion to invest in such upcoming films as "", "" and "". The company's Chairman Bruce Berman said of the renewed deal, "This gives us the certainty we want and lets Warner Bros. know that over the next five years, its largest partners will remain at home."

Under the renewed deal, Village Roadshow decided to increase the amount of money to finance movies from $1 billion to $1.125 billion. According to Village Roadshow's Chief Executive Greg Basser, with the new financial agreement, the company was also able to significantly reduce the cost of its debt.

WB and Village Roadshow's deal extension marks the highest profile business deal that the Burbank studio sealed amid speculations on who's going to replace Barry Meyer as its leader in 2013. The tension inside the studio, in which its senior executives are racing to win the coveted job, had made it difficult for the studio to seal some business contracts recently.

While Warners decided to extend its contract with Village Roadshow, insiders told L.A. Times that the studio would likely not renew its deal with its other financing partner, Legendary Pictures, until the executive succession process is resolved.

After closing the new deal, Village Roadshow plans to invest in six to eight movies a year for Warner Bros. Among the upcoming films the company is financing are 's "" and 's "".

Thread: And a few pepper mills - Family Woodworking

I've discovered the little 4" crank mills from PSI... they're cute, easy to make and pretty good sellers... these are 5 that I finished this week for the holiday markets. They're all 4" tall and finished with wipe on polyurethane.

This one is Oak Burl and probably my favorite of this batch.

Dying to Be in the Holiday Parade Party: In Not a Funny Or Good Way

No disrespect. But dying to be a part of the holiday parade party: in a not a funny or good way is exactly the thought when I heard about someone that I believe had to be a really cool guy, Robert Blasetti, a 67 year old Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?volunteer.

Unfortunately, Mr. Blasetti?died "clowning", making people kids laugh and grown up's smile on Thanksgiving Day while taking part?in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in?New York City.

What a shame. The poor man had a heart attack.?

He was making balloon animals one minute, and sometime thereafter he was pronounced dead at a local NY City hospital.

What a heck of a tragic?occurrence for his poor family to have deal with at this time of the year. If you believe prayer, bow your head for a minute and send up a little something special for the members of his family.

All I can hope is that his family might feel good knowing that he died doing something that he loved, entertaining people. But it's still just so sad for his loved ones that he left behind.

I've only posted one other blog article about someone's death; the "King of Pop" icon, Michael Jackson. However, I felt that this was equally important for me to post because?people who clown are a part of the party industry family too;?wherever they perform and however loosely associated it may seem they are as being a part of our "family".

Clowns are a significant part of a party when they're hired, often becoming the main attraction, if not stealing the entire show. Clowning is an honorable profession. Bozo the Clown,?Buttons the Ringling Brothers clown, and French actor and famous mime, Marcel Marceau's famous persona, Bip the Clown, are just a few on a long list of some of the greatest clowns of all time.

May Mr. Blasetti rest in peace. And may God bless each member of his family. I am sorry for your loss.

I do this... I write to help to create to opportunities for all of you to pursue your passion to have parties without regard to economic constraints.

I think if we keep talking about the cost of parties (I blog, you write comments), together, maybe we can break down some of the party industry price barriers and shame some of the people who've taken your money and delivered a poor quality product right into growing a conscious and treating you right (nice thought, isn't it?).

Opportunities to be inspired about parties are everywhere. Yet, people looking out for your wallet are few and far between. My goal is to inspire you, causing you to question the way things are that have been the status quo for too long. When we stand together and speak up, we can be a powerful force.

Let's keep the conversation of change going. Because in the sea of everyone talking, one voice is a whisper... several voices are a scream.

Leave a comment and share your thoughts, ideas and suggestions below. Remember to be as specific as possible because what you have to say helps us all.

I really love you guys. There, I said it.

?Always... be encouraged and encourage others too,

?Don't be ashamed to need help. Like a soldier storming a wall, you have a mission to accomplish. And if you've been wounded and you need a comrade to pull you up? So what?? - Marcus Aurelius

Orpheum's holiday concert benefits Sunrise Retirement Community ...

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Is there a better way to kick off the holiday season than with a holiday concert?

Siouxlanders headed over to the Orpheum Theater Saturday night, to catch Jill Miller perform a variety concert. Ticket sales will benefit the Sunrise Retirement Community.???????????

Past concerts have raised more than $125,000 for those who can't afford to stay in a nursing home.

"We do gratuitous care. And in many instances, last year, almost a million dollars of unreimbursed Medicare, Medicaid, people that don't have financial arranged for their care," said Beverly Zenor, executive director of Sunrise Retirement.

KTIV's Kristie VerMulm emceed the event. The turnout for the concert was so big Saturday night, that the ushers ran out of programs.

Nokia Transit updated with segmented maps, advance routing on Windows Phone and Symbian

Nokia Transit update brings segmented route maps, relative times to Windows Phone and Symbian

Nokia still has a ways to go before directions in Nokia Transit (also known as Nokia Transport) are on par with Google's, but the Finnish crew is clearly on the right track with a fresh update to its Windows Phone and Symbian apps. Travelers now see segmented route maps that provide a closer look at key points in the trip as well as more focused directions at those crucial moments. The app is that much more savvy about travel times, as well -- the forward-thinking can at last plan trips days in advance, and there's new options for relative arrival times as well as a simplified destination history. Symbian even gets its own specific update with long-overdue support for route updates in-app, rather than through upgrading the app itself. Lumia owners on Windows Phone 8 devices can get the spruced-up version of Transit or Transport today as a regular update; Symbian and Windows Phone 7 users willing to live on the edge can get roughly equivalent betas at the same time.

Obama visits bookstore, promotes "Small Business Saturday"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama, in a bid to show support for small businesses, took his daughters on an early Christmas shopping trip on Saturday as the U.S. retail sector swings into high gear this holiday season.

Promoting "Small Business Saturday," the third annual event that encourages consumers to support independently-owned local shops, Obama took his daughters Sasha and Malia to "One More Page Books" in Arlington, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C.

"Preparation," said Obama, while talking to the store owner at the front counter and looking at his BlackBerry, apparently checking book titles while his daughters stood at his side. "That's how I shop."

Over the last two decades, small businesses have created two of every three U.S. jobs. To try to spur job growth, the Obama administration says it aims to cut taxes for small businesses and expand entrepreneurs' access to financing.

Both Main Street merchants and larger retailers will find out soon if the so-called fiscal cliff that threatens to produce tax increases and automatic spending cuts in January will subdue shoppers and hold back spending this holiday season.

Congress and Obama are about to negotiate on a deal to avert the roughly $600 billion in tax increases and spending cuts set to start jolting the economy at the beginning of 2013.

Asked by reporters what is needed to cushion the economic impact of the looming fiscal cliff, Obama declined to answer, saying "we're doing Christmas shopping."

The White House said Obama bought 15 children's books that will be given as Christmas gifts to family members.

Last year, more than 100 million Americans shopped locally on Small Business Saturday, according to an estimate by American Express.

Small businesses taking part in the initiative use social networks like Facebook and Twitter to promote deals and attract potential customers.

Taking to Twitter himself after the shopping excursion, Obama wrote: "My family & I started our holiday shopping at a local bookstore on #SmallBizSat. I hope you'll join & shop small this holiday season."

The nationwide initiative that urges customers to open their wallets to local businesses follows Black Friday, one the nation's busiest shopping days at major retailers falling the day after Thanksgiving.

The Monday after Thanksgiving is known as Cyber Monday, where deals are found on the Internet and is more often a hit with shoppers unwilling to brave long lines.

Analysis: Israel wins U.S. support on Gaza but differences remain

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As conflict erupted in Gaza last week, Israel's officials and supporters embarked on what proved a successful diplomatic and media campaign to ensure the United States remained right behind them.

Israel's ambassador to Washington Michael Oren became a regular fixture on cable news channels and talk shows. Pro-Israel lobby groups such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and the Israel Project bombarded journalists with e-mails offering footage of Hamas rocket strikes and interviews with ordinary Israelis in the line of fire.

After a year of increasingly public disagreements over how to tackle Iran, relations between the Obama Administration and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government were perhaps worse than at any time in recent memory.

But the level of U.S. backing for Israel in the last week, both Israel's supporters and independent analysts say, shows both the depth of ties between the two countries and the level of influence Israel's supporters can exert when the country feels threatened.

Few doubt there will be differences ahead, particularly when dealing with Iran returns to the top of the agenda. But for now, Israeli officials and supporters simply say they are satisfied with the level of support received over Gaza.

"I think you've seen a very strong response... standing resolutely with Israel," says Josh Block, chief executive of the Israel Project, a Washington-based pressure group that has long pushed for greater U.S. support and a tougher line against its enemies. "It's a reminder of ... how lasting the special relationship is. This is about more than the personal ties between two leaders."

Widely seen as having tried to nudge this year's U.S. presidential election against Barack Obama and towards Republican challenger Mitt Romney, Netanyahu seems keen to repair relations. On Thursday, he praised Obama for his "unwavering support."

In a CNN/ORC poll conducted over last weekend, 57 percent of Americans said they believed Israel was justified in taking military action compared to 25 percent who opposed it.

But Gaza may be almost the only issue on which the two countries genuinely and popularly agree.

Beyond differences over Iran, many Democrats in particular - as well as liberal members of the U.S. Jewish community, which makes up two percent of the total population - have expressed frustration over Israeli settlement building on the West Bank and the growing influence of Orthodox and hardline parties.

"Of course, during a war many - though by no means all - parts of American society will rally round Israel," says Ariel Ratner, a former Obama Administration political appointee and now fellow at the Truman National Security Project. "But potential problems loom large in the future if Israel doesn't address them."

URGING RESTRAINT?

A spokesman for the U.N. mission of the Palestinian Authority - which administers the West Bank and lost control of Gaza to Hamas in 2007 - would not comment on U.S. media coverage of the war or the relationship between Israel and Washington.

But he said Palestinians viewed the entire Israeli campaign as a deliberate distraction from their bid for nationhood at the United Nations. "We believe they would try anything to stop this," the spokesman said, asking not to be identified.

The United States may have been influential in urging Israeli restraint. According to Israeli officials, Obama phoned Netanyahu at the beginning of the conflict to say the United States would rather not see a ground invasion of Gaza like that during its 2008-9 war.

That may have helped avoid escalation and casualties on the scale of that war, which killed well over 1,000 people, almost all in Gaza. Israeli officials say Netanyahu always hoped to avoid another ground campaign.

Four Israeli civilians and two soldiers were killed by rocket fire from Gaza during the latest conflict. Palestinian casualties were much higher - 163, according to local officials. While Israel used a much greater tonnage of explosions than Hamas, it says it used precision munitions and went to great length to avoid collateral damage even as Hamas fired from densely populated areas.

Israel's supporters say they have been able to use a variety of techniques - from traditional newspaper editorials to Twitter and Facebook - to get their message across.

"How people get information has changed and traditional media no longer has a monopoly," says Israel Project's Block. "That presents challenges and opportunities. You've seen Israeli officials making their case - echoing the views of most Americans - very persuasively through both social media and traditional outlets."

IRAN DIFFERENCES LOOM

Pro-Israeli groups have long used a similar approach to raise awareness of their worries over Tehran's nuclear program, but with perhaps less success. U.S. voters might like their leader's pro-Israeli, but there is little enthusiasm inside or outside Washington for more major wars.

"I think events in Gaza have heightened public sympathy for Israel, and that may last for some time," says Nikolas Gvosdev, professor of national security studies at the U.S. Naval War College. "That may make it more difficult for Obama to push for concessions on the peace process with the Palestinians, but I don't think it wins the Israelis anything on Iran."

On one level, there seems little difference in position between those in Washington and their Israeli counterparts. Both want ever tightening sanctions and both nations have co-operated heavily on covert action to slow Tehran's alleged nuclear development. The United States says it will not allow Tehran to reach "breakout capacity" to build a bomb, while Israel says its "red line" is the less well defined "nuclear capability."

Israel's repeated threats this year to take matters into its own hands and strike nuclear facilities directly, however, were seen by some, in the Obama Administration in particular, as a clear attempt to influence U.S. policy. Israeli officials say military action would only be a last resort, but a nuclear Iran would simply be too great a threat and they might simply have no choice.

More attempts to push U.S. policymakers around, however, could just be counter-productive.

"It's important that Israelis understand the exact nature of the damage caused by Netanyahu's involvement in the U.S. election and general treatment of Obama," says Truman Project's Ratner. "The real problem for Israel is that very important American constituencies, including many young people and segments of the Jewish community, the media, military and next generation of Democratic party leadership, have been disturbed by general trends in Netanyahu's Israel."

Leading a nonprofit 8: some implications of the nonprofit funding ...

This is my eighth installment in a new series on leading a nonprofit (see my Guide to Effective Job Search and Career Development ? 2, postings 267-273 for Parts 1-7.) As I noted in Part 7: benchmarking and keeping the organization focused and effective, my goal here has been to focus on issues and perspectives that are particular to leading a nonprofit organization, as I have already been posting fairly extensively on executive level management and leadership per se. And with that point noted, I turn in this posting to consider what in many respects is the central, defining issue that would set nonprofit leadership apart from leadership of any other type of organization: for profit or not for profit in the private sector or leadership of a governmental organization or agency in the public sector.

? Nonprofits are mission and vision driven, and mission and vision-oriented sources of direct value that are created through the organization almost always go to different individuals and families than the ones who donate the funds that would enable those direct benefits. Donors, I add, make their contributions in this from what they can be brought to see as their available discretionary income.
? So in a very fundamental sense, and looking at this from the perspective of the people who make donations and who provide the nonprofit?s incoming revenue streams, nonprofits are in the business of creating and providing a sustaining sense of hope.
? Nonprofits are in the hope business, and that ultimately is their product and service, and even as they actually succeed in taking successful steps towards specifically fulfilling their overall mission and vision statement goals.

I find myself thinking of healthcare-oriented nonprofits that I have worked with as I write this, and particularly The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. And I find myself thinking of educational opportunity and community development oriented nonprofits that I have worked with too, and in that regard I find myself thinking of Per Scholas.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society supports translational research that brings discoveries from the laboratory into clinical practice and application where they can save lives and improve the quality of life for many. And the Society also provides direct support for individuals and their families who are confronted with the at times terrifying challenges of blood cancer. Per Scholas offers opportunity for people from under-served and impoverished communities to create futures for themselves and their families. Both take positive steps and every single day towards fulfilling their missions and visions. But bottom line, their primary product and certainly as offered to those who financially support them is hope. In a fundamental sense and longer-term, that sense of hope means that they would in effect put themselves out of business by completing the realization of their mission and vision goals.

? So in a fundamental sense and certainly long-term, a mission and vision driven nonprofit seeks to put itself out of business by making itself no longer needed.

And this brings me to nonprofit leadership and to the type of person it takes to run a nonprofit on an ongoing basis.

? As I have already noted in other postings, the one consistent route to advancement up the table of organization in nonprofit systems, is to move between nonprofits (see for example, Nonprofits ? Staffing and Career Potential.) With their limited staffing ? a basic tool for limiting personnel and other non-mission expenses, most nonprofits rarely offer real, consistent opportunity for advancement from within.
? So people advance to higher levels of responsibility by moving on to work with other nonprofits. And this applies to top leadership positions for already established nonprofits, just as it does for every other non-entry level type of position, and certainly for higher level positions in those organizations.

That means that most new chief executive officers for established nonprofits at least, start there as outside hires with extensive experience in the nonprofit sector from working with other organizations ? and in support of other missions and visions.

? Effective leadership of a nonprofit organization does not necessarily call for a specific overriding drive towards supporting any one particular mission or vision ? though some nonprofit leaders start out with such a focus and maintain it throughout their overall career paths.
? Effective nonprofit leadership calls for an understanding and appreciation of the overarching value of societally important missions and visions per se, and a willingness to enter into and work to support them and on an ongoing basis.
? And when an executive assumes leadership with a specific nonprofit they do so agreeing to wholeheartedly support its mission and vision and for as long as they work there.

Any CEO should be expected to show loyalty to their organization and to the employees they lead there, and to their customers and others who rely on them. That is a general principle, and a test of principle and character that any chief executive officer should be measured against. Nonprofit leaders, or at least good ones, exemplify the spirit of that in their day to day lives. That at least is what I have seen in the best of them and the most effective of them as leaders. Businesses with primarily self-serving leaders who are in it only for themselves suffer from that; nonprofits with that type of leadership fail. And mission and vision become litmus tests for a nonprofit?s and a nonprofit?s leader?s success.

I am going to continue this discussion in my next installment where I will shift focus from the established nonprofit, to building and leading a new nonprofit ? a nonprofit startup. Meanwhile, you can find this and related postings at my Guide to Effective Job Search and Career Development ? 2. I have also posted extensively on jobs and careers-related topics in my first Guide directory page on Job Search and Career Development. You can also find this and related postings at Nonprofits and Social Networking.

Is There Mail On Thanksgiving 2012? Friday, The Day After Thanksgiving?

As typical around major holidays, many Americans are wondering if there is mail on Thanksgiving Day or the day after Thanksgiving.

Here's what you need to know about mail service for Thanksgiving 2012 and the day after Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, is an official holiday, according to the United States Postal Service (USPS), so mail will not be delivered on that day.

Mail service from the USPS will resume on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, the day after Thanksgiving.

However, not all mail operations are back to normal on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

The UPS, for instance, considers both Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving "holidays." That means there will be no UPS service on Friday, Nov. 23, except for air and international delivery/pickup. Keep that in mind if you have a package to send or you're expecting one.

FedEx has a different policy. Thanksgiving Day is a holiday and there will be no FedEx service. However, the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 23, FedEx will have modified hours and business for its Express service, its Ground and Home Delivery services will be up and running as normal, but its Freight service will be closed for the day.

If you're wondering about your local post office, it will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but you'll want to check locally in terms of possible hours for Friday, the day after Thanksgiving.

Hamas-Israel cease-fire takes hold but mistrust runs deep

CAIRO/GAZA (Reuters) - A ceasefire between Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers took hold on Thursday after eight days of conflict, although deep mistrust on both sides cast doubt on how long the Egyptian-sponsored deal can last.

Even after the ceasefire came into force late on Wednesday, a dozen rockets from the Gaza Strip landed in Israel, all in open areas, a police spokesman said. In Gaza, witnesses reported an explosion shortly after the truce took effect at 9 p.m (1900 GMT), but there were no casualties and the cause was unclear.

The deal prevented, at least for the moment, an Israeli ground invasion of the Palestinian enclave following bombing and rocket fire which killed five Israelis and 162 Gazans, including 37 children.

But trust was in short supply. The exiled leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, said his Islamist movement would respect the truce if Israel did, but would respond to any violations. "If Israel complies, we are compliant. If it does not comply, our hands are on the trigger," he told a news conference in Cairo.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had agreed to "exhaust this opportunity for an extended truce", but told his people a tougher approach might be required in the future.

Both sides quickly began offering differing interpretations of the ceasefire, brokered by Egypt's new Islamist government and backed by the United States, highlighting the many actual or potential areas of discord.

If it holds, the truce will give 1.7 million Gazans respite from days of ferocious air strikes and halt rocket salvoes from militants that unnerved a million people in southern Israel and reached Tel Aviv and Jerusalem for the first time.

"Allahu akbar, (God is greatest), dear people of Gaza you won," blared mosque loudspeakers in Gaza as the truce took effect. "You have broken the arrogance of the Jews."

Fifteen minutes later, wild celebratory gunfire echoed across the darkened streets, which gradually filled with crowds waving Palestinian flags. Ululating women leaned out of windows and fireworks lit up the sky.

Meshaal thanked Egypt for mediating and praised Iran for providing Gazans with financing and arms. "We have come out of this battle with our heads up high," he said, adding that Israel had been defeated and failed in its "adventure".

Some Israelis staged protests against the deal, notably in the southern town of Kiryat Malachi, where three people were killed by a Gaza rocket during the conflict, army radio said.

Netanyahu said he was willing to give the truce a chance but held open the possibility of reopening the conflict. "I know there are citizens expecting a more severe military action, and perhaps we shall need to do so," he said.

The Israeli leader, who faces a parliamentary election in January, delivered a similar message earlier in a telephone call with U.S. President Barack Obama, his office said.

"AN OPEN PRISON"

According to a text of the agreement seen by Reuters, both sides should halt all hostilities, with Israel desisting from incursions and targeting of individuals, while all Palestinian factions should cease rocket fire and cross-border attacks.

The deal also provides for easing Israeli restrictions on Gaza's residents, who live in what British Prime Minister David Cameron has called an "open prison".

The text said procedures for implementing this would be "dealt with after 24 hours from the start of the ceasefire".

Israeli sources said Israel would not lift a blockade of the enclave it enforced after Hamas, which rejects the Jewish state's right to exist, won a Palestinian election in 2006.

However, Meshaal said the deal covered the opening of all of the territory's border crossings. "The document stipulates the opening of the crossings, all the crossings, and not just Rafah," he said. Israel controls all of Gaza's crossings apart from the Rafah post with Egypt.

Hamas lost its top military commander to an Israeli strike in the conflict and suffered serious hits to its infrastructure and weaponry, but has emerged with its reputation both in the Arab world and at home stronger.

Israel can take comfort from the fact it dealt painful blows to its enemy, which will take many months to recover, and showed that it can defend itself from a barrage of missiles.

"No one is under the illusion that this is going to be an everlasting ceasefire. It is clear to everyone it will only be temporary," said Michael Herzog, a former chief of staff at the Israeli ministry of defence.

"But there is a chance that it could hold for a significant period of time, if all goes well," he told Reuters.

Egypt, an important U.S. ally now under Islamist leadership, took centre stage in diplomacy to halt the bloodshed. Cairo has walked a fine line between its sympathies for Hamas, an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood to which President Mohamed Mursi belongs, and its need to preserve its 1979 peace treaty with Israel and its ties with Washington, its main aid donor.

Announcing the agreement in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr said mediation had "resulted in understandings to cease fire, restore calm and halt the bloodshed".

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, standing beside Amr, thanked Mursi for peace efforts that showed "responsibility, leadership" in the region.

The Gaza conflict erupted in a Middle East already shaken by last year's Arab uprisings that toppled several veteran U.S.-backed leaders, including Egypt's Hosni Mubarak, and by a civil war in Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad is fighting for survival.

In his call with Netanyahu, Obama in turn repeated U.S. commitment to Israel's security and promised to seek funds for a joint missile defence program, the White House said.

BUS BOMBING

The ceasefire was forged despite a bus bomb explosion that wounded 15 Israelis in Tel Aviv earlier in the day and despite more Israeli air strikes that killed 10 Gazans. It was the first serious bombing in Israel's commercial capital since 2006.

Israel, the United States and the European Union all classify Hamas as a terrorist organization. It seized the Gaza Strip from the Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007 in a brief but bloody war with his Fatah movement.

"This is a critical moment for the region," Clinton said. "Egypt's new government is assuming the responsibility and leadership that has long made this country a cornerstone for regional stability and peace."

In Amman, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon urged both sides to stick to their ceasefire pledges. "There may be challenges implementing this agreement," he said, urging "maximum restraint".

Peripheral roads stuck in legal tangle - Real Estate India

??|?? November 22, 2012 ?? 08:53am ??|Contributed by manoja

22 Nov 2012
Hindustan Times (Delhi)

The much awaited northern peripheral road (NPR) project, which connects Delhi with Gurgaon, is likely to miss its deadline of December 2.

This is the Haryana government?s biggest ever project in terms of the width (150m) of the expressway, connecting Dwarka in west Delhi and Kherki Daula. The NH-8 is only 75m wide.

The total length of the NPR, also known as Dwarka Expressway, is 18km of which the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) had awarded only 14km. The contract was given to JSR Construction Pvt Ltd and Indiabulls Construction Limited, who are working jointly.
The project was awarded on April 1 last year, with a completion deadline of one year that expired on March 31 this year. The HUDA extended its deadline by six months and later set its deadline as December 2.

According to a HUDA official, the bituminous work is complete only on 6km stretch till date.

On the rest of the 14km stretch, the HUDA official said, ?Work is in full swing on the awarded length.?

Earlier in April, HUDA officials had said that 14km length of the NPR would be completed latest by October and there would be no further extension.

?We are closely monitoring the work progress and are hopeful that the October deadline will be the final,? the then executive engineer, HUDA had said.

The unawarded 4km stretch is stuck in legal tangle as hundreds of local people have moved court demanding fair compensation from the Haryana government.

?Until the government gives us compensation as directed by the PunjabandHaryanaHigh Courtin 2006-07, we will not allow the NPR work to take place,? said Rishi Raj Rana, area councilor.

The NPR starts from Dwarka in west Delhi and passes through Bijwasan, New Palam Vihar, Kherki Daula and finally meets at NH-8. HUDA Sectors 83 to 113 are located along this expressway. There will be a commercial belt touching Sectors 105, 106, 109,110, 110A, 111, 112 and 113 with Sectors 100 and 101 being for public utilities.

Sectors 114 and 88 are fully commercial. Other residential sectors that are a little far away from the expressway but will benefit from it are Sectors 81-86, 89-93 and 95.

?The delay is a sign of the negligence of the government. The government is not ready to realise that tens of thousands of people have invested their hard earned money in upcoming properties along the NPR,? said Navin Raheja, president of the National Realty Development Council (NRDC) of India. SOUTHERN PERIPHERAL ROAD Like the northern peripheral road (NPR), the southern peripheral road (SPR), 12km, will also prove to be the lifeline for the future growth of Gurgaon. But the delay in its completion is worrying the commuters. A three-km stretch between NH-8 and Sohna Road is still incomplete.

The SPR?s extended time line is December 2 but like the NPR, the SPR is also stuck in legal tangles resulting in delay upon delay. The SPR connects Kherki Daula on NH-8 with village Ghata, near Sector 55, further to FaridabadGurgaon highway, which is used by thousands of commuters to reach Sohna from Faridabad and vice versa, to bypass the busy MG Road.

In connection with the SPR, the government has shown utmost negligence by not solving the issue of a small village, Darbaripur that is proving to be a major hurdle.

The people of the village have moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court accusing the Haryana government of forcibly acquiring their forefathers? land and displacing them to benefit the developers.

?We are not going to leave our ancestral land, we have been here for hundreds of years and the government did not even inform us that it is planning to acquire our land. We are not going to compromise at all with this land,? said Rambir Singh, a resident of the village, adding that the government has conspired with the developer to snatch their land.

?The two mega projects, NPR and SPR are the future growth of the millennium city. We hope the Haryana government will solve the issues shortly,? said DPS Nagal, chief administrator, HUDA.
