Mood of the Nation: Worrying how others are faring

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? On the eve of the 2012 elections, The Associated Press interviewed dozens of Americans to try to gauge the economic mood of the nation. People were asked about jobs, housing, gas prices, retirement and other issues. Among them was Vicki Williams, 47, of Mechanicsville, Va., outside Richmond. Williams feels secure in her job as an occupational therapist for a school district. Her view of the economy has brightened. Yet she worries that the nation has drifted away from a political culture that once seemed more inclined to help the needy.

___

Williams says she can see the economy getting better, little by little.

She knows more people who have found jobs in recent months, particularly those with skills and advanced degrees in business or health care. And she sees more friends confident enough in the economy to invest in long-delayed home improvement work.

"People aren't as fearful about any minute they will lose their job," Williams says.

At the same time, she's disheartened by what she sees as a more polarized nation. It typically happens when Williams, who backs President Barack Obama, talks politics with neighbors who support Mitt Romney.

"When we have conversations about helping others out, the attitude is, 'Anybody that's received any kind of assistance from the government in any way is just a taker.' Whereas from my experience, I've seen families I work with have to use government assistance for specific things... and then are able to then get themselves back on their feet and maybe help someone else."

Average pay in the United States isn't keeping up with inflation, and some people Williams knows are barely getting by on their paychecks. They're one medical crisis away from a financial catastrophe. As a health care professional, she also knows people who rely on Medicaid and other public aid and would be vulnerable to federal cuts.

She says she's fortunate not to have needed government help herself. Williams remained employed throughout the recession even as many states and localities cut jobs.

"People will always need therapy," she says. "My field is in demand."

Together with her husband, an Army reservist and military contractor, Williams has maintained a comfortable upper-middle class lifestyle. They have two children: One is in college; the other is working on an internship and attending college classes.

She's kept up contributions to her 401(k) and doesn't fret about retirement. The couple owns a home that's held its value. This year, they had hardwood floors installed in the kitchen and bathroom.

"The houses in our neighborhood are selling," she says. "If we wanted to get out, we would make a nice profit."

In her view, the president doesn't deserve all the blame for the still-weak economy or high unemployment, now at 7.8 percent. She wishes Republicans and Democrats would work more cooperatively to strengthen the economy.

"My dream for America," Williams says, "is that we'll go back to our core values of taking care of other people and looking out for other people instead of just looking out for ourselves."

Smarter electric grids could help us weather stormy future

14 hrs.

As of Tuesday morning, Sandy was blamed for power outages affecting more than 8 million people. Although?of little help to people in the dark today, so-called smart-grid technologies being installed around the country will make the electric grid more resilient to future storms, according to an industry expert.

One caveat: ?It is economically unfeasible to storm-proof your system, and by storm-proof I mean resilient to anything that could happen,? Dean Oskvig, president of engineering consulting firm Black & Veatch?s global energy business, told NBC News Tuesday.

But utilities are installing technology such as self-healing switches that automatically route power around outages in an effort to minimize disruptions to service, he said.

Much of the smart grid is really about the installation of sensors and other equipment that offer utilities real-time monitoring of the grid so that they can detect and isolate power outages more quickly, which limits their spread and impact.?

Real-time monitoring of the grid also enables integration of small-scale distributed power stations onto the grid, which can provide electricity to a neighborhood, for example, when the city?s main plant is down.

Distributed power stations harken back to early days of the electric system when it was a hodgepodge of ?small individual generators all over the place and it was simply chaotic,? Oskvig said. As a result, greater reliability and efficiency drove evolution toward a system that relies on central power plants.

Today, however, the communications technology that underpins smart-grid systems ?has a way of accommodating a lot more distributed generation than we were able to do in the past,? he added.?

By the same token, a more intelligent grid is able to accommodate increased wind and solar power, which are plagued by intermittency.

?But, when you are faced with something like the storm out east, a smart grid will only take you so far,? Oskvig said.?

Utilities can make their grids more resilient with more traditional approaches such as?putting more of their power lines underground, which puts them out of the way of wind-toppled trees. But undergrounding lines costs several million dollars per mile versus a few hundred thousand dollars for overhead lines.

And even when lines are underground, that doesn?t mean the system is storm-proof. Power lines in New York City, for example, are already mostly underground. That didn?t stop floodwater from shutting down substations, Oskvig noted.

What measures a utility takes to make their systems more resilient to storms is a cost-benefit calculation. Sandy is considered a once-in-a-generation-type storm. Is it worth spending to put in?underground lines, install self-healing technology or build more, smaller distributed generation plants?

Given that Sandy is the type of storm that experts believe is consistent with global climate change, a more resilient grid seems prudent for our stormier future, a future that by some accounts is already here.

In the last year?New York, for example, has seen two tropical storms and a ?freak? snowstorm on Halloween 2011 that dumped a foot of snow. Each of those storms led to costly power outages that were, in isolation, considered rare events.

The cost of implementing the technologies required to smarten up and improve the grid will cost about $1.5 trillion over the next two decades, Mark Brownstein with the Environmental Defense Fund told American Public Media?s Marketplace on Monday.?

Smart as a bird: Flying rescue robot will autonomously avoid obstacles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Cornell researchers have created an autonomous flying robot that is as smart as a bird when it comes to maneuvering around obstacles.

Able to guide itself through forests, tunnels or damaged buildings, the machine could have tremendous value in search-and-rescue operations. Small flying machines are already common, and GPS technology provides guidance. Now, Ashutosh Saxena, assistant professor of computer science, and his team are tackling the hard part: how to keep the vehicle from slamming into walls and tree branches. Human controllers can't always react swiftly enough, and radio signals may not reach everywhere the robot goes.

The test vehicle is a quadrotor, a commercially available flying machine about the size of a card table with four helicopter rotors. Saxena and his team have already programmed quadrotors to navigate hallways and stairwells using 3-D cameras. But in the wild, these cameras aren't accurate enough at large distances to plan a route around obstacles. So, Saxena is building on methods he previously developed to turn a flat video camera image into a 3-D model of the environment using such cues as converging straight lines, the apparent size of familiar objects and what objects are in front of or behind each other -- the same cues humans unconsciously use to supplement their stereoscopic vision.

Graduate students Ian Lenz and Mevlana Gemici trained the robot with 3-D pictures of such obstacles as tree branches, poles, fences and buildings; the robot's computer learns the characteristics all the images have in common, such as color, shape, texture and context -- a branch, for example, is attached to a tree. The resulting set of rules for deciding what is an obstacle is burned into a chip before the robot flies. In flight the robot breaks the current 3-D image of its environment into small chunks based on obvious boundaries, decides which ones are obstacles and computes a path through them as close as possible to the route it has been told to follow, constantly making adjustments as the view changes. It was tested in 53 autonomous flights in obstacle-rich environments -- including Cornell's Arts Quad -- succeeding in 51 cases, failing twice because of winds. The results were presented at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Portugal Oct. 7-12.

Saxena plans to improve the robot's ability to respond to environment variations such as winds, and enable it to detect and avoid moving objects, like real birds; for testing purposes, he suggests having people throw tennis balls at the flying vehicle.

The project is supported by a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Samsung ATIV Odyssey brings even more Windows Phone 8 to Verizon this December

Samsung ATIV Odyssey brings more Windows Phone 8 to Verizon this December

Microsoft's ultimate Windows Phone 8 event mostly expanded on a familiar story, but it did leave us a surprise twist near the end. The company confirmed that Samsung will bring its own Metro-tinged experience to Verizon through the ATIV Odyssey this December. Unfortunately, that's about all we know on an official level: Microsoft even used a placeholder graphic rather than show Samsung's real-world design. However, that awfully familiar-sounding name suggests that Samsung and Verizon are directly exploiting that Odyssey codename which many associated with the ATIV S. If so, we're looking at a device that's not at all far off from a GSM equivalent, keeping the Snapdragon S4, LTE and both 8- as well as 2-megapixel cameras. Whether or not the Super AMOLED screen dips to a slightly lower 4.65-inch isn't as known. Even so, the ATIV Odyssey is at least another sign that Verizon will have much more than a token Windows Phone lineup this time around.

Super PACs, nonprofits favored Romney

By Michael Beckel and Russ ChomaCenter The Center for Public Integrity/The Center for Responsive Politics

Super PACs and nonprofits unleashed by the Citizens United Supreme Court decision have spent more than $840 million on the 2012 election, with the overwhelming majority favoring Republicans, particularly GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Who are the Mega Donors giving millions to pro-Obama and pro-Romney Super PACS to help pay for negative ads in the closing days of the campaign? NBC's National Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff reports on big donors with some specific agendas.?

An estimated $577 million, or roughly 69 percent, was spent by conservative groups, compared with $237 million spent by liberal groups, or about 28 percent, with the remainder expended by other organizations.

Of all outside spending in the 2012 election, more than $450 million was dedicated to the presidential election with more than $350 million spent helping Romney and about $100 million spent to help President Barack Obama.

The spending helped close the gap on Obama?s considerable fundraising advantage over Romney. As Election Day approaches, Romney and Obama are neck-and-neck in national polls.

The totals are from a joint analysis of Federal Election Commission data by the Center for Responsive Politics and the Center for Public Integrity. The analysis covers the period from Jan. 1, 2011, through Oct. 28, 2012, and does not include independent spending by the political party committees.

The final tally will be higher as spending continues to accelerate before Election Day.

Obama's campaign raised more than $632 million in the 2012 election, 62 percent more than Romney's $389 million. Even when including money raised by the Democratic and Republican National Committees, Obama still has an edge of more than $166 million: $924 million for the president?s re-election team vs. $758 million for Romney and the GOP.

The president?s campaign committee was bankrolled to a great degree by money from grassroots supporters, while Romney relied more heavily on larger donors. Individuals who gave $200 or less accounted for 34 percent of Obama?s war chest. Meanwhile, such small-dollar donors were responsible for only 18 percent of the Romney campaign?s haul.

The deluge of outside spending was made possible by the 2010 Citizens United decision and a lower court ruling that allowed individuals, labor unions and corporations to give money to outside spending groups ? mostly nonprofits and super PACs ? to buy advertising attacking or supporting candidates.

Super PACs were generally backed by super donors. Billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and his family, for example, gave $54 million to Republican super PACs as of mid-October, far more than any other donor this election cycle.

Nonprofit ?social welfare? groups and trade associations can raise just as much money, but are not required to report their donors. The lack of transparency sparked legislation to require disclosure, but it was defeated.

Nonprofits were responsible for more than $245 million, or about 30 percent, of the $840 million in total outside spending. That?s about $100 million more than they spent in 2010.

Spending surge helps Romney
During the week of Sept. 30, about $16.5 million was spent by outside groups benefiting Romney, mostly on ads attacking Obama. Three weeks later, the seven-day total jumped to more than $55 million, according to FEC filings.

Outside spending benefiting Obama over the same period never exceeded $14 million, records show.

The GOP candidate, facing the Obama fundraising juggernaut, needed the help of outside groups to keep pace.

The Obama campaign aired nearly three times as many ads as the Romney campaign between late April and late October, according to a recent study by the Wesleyan Media Project.

Wesleyan found that the 460,500 ads aired by the Obama campaign in the presidential election was more than the Romney campaign, the RNC and seven other Republican-aligned outside spending groups combined ? including the top GOP super PACs Restore Our Future and American Crossroads and conservative nonprofits Crossroads GPS and Americans for Prosperity.

Super PACs in the 2012 election raised about $660 million.

Restore Our Future alone accounted for about $1 out of every $5 of all super PAC donations received. The pro-Romney group raised more than $130 million, much of which was spent decimating Romney?s rivals during the GOP primaries.

The Obama-backing Priorities USA Action, by contrast, raised $64 million.

In 2010, during their first year of existence, all super PACs combined raised just $85 million.

The top 149 individual super PAC donors ? each of whom has contributed at least $500,000 ? are responsible for $290 million of funds raised.

And 858 individuals who contributed at least $50,000 to super PACs accounted for nearly 60 percent of all money the groups collected in the 2012 election. The median household income in 2011, by way of comparison, was $50,054, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Donations from large, publicly traded corporations have been relatively rare, but in the waning weeks of the campaign, oil and gas giant Chevron wrote a $2.5 million check to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC backing Republican candidates that is closely associated with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

The emergence of super PACs has been heralded by some, such as Republican lawyer Brad Smith, the former chairman of the Federal Election Commission who co-founded the conservative Center for Competitive Politics.

?(Super PACs) have helped to level the playing field between Romney and Obama, whereas otherwise Obama?s spending advantage would have been substantial,? said Smith. ?And in some cases they have raised issues that concern voters that the candidates have chosen to avoid.?

Others disagree.

?When elected officials rely on the most-wealthy of wealthy Americans, it means the voices of everyday people lose out,? said Nick Nyhart, president of the advocacy group Public Campaign, which favors publicly financed elections.

Unlike traditional political action committees, super PACs have no contribution limits and the funds they raise can't be directly donated to candidates. Instead, the money they raise has primarily been used to fund attack ads.

Prior to Citizens United, groups that wanted to expressly advocate for or against a candidate were limited to receiving no more than $5,000 per donor per calendar year.

Donations shrouded in secrecy
As important as super PACs were in the 2012 election, the loosening of political spending rules for non-disclosing, nonprofit organizations was also a key development following the Citizens United decision.

GOP-aligned nonprofits have outspent their Democratic counterparts by a ratio of more than 8 to 1.

Notably, this figure represents a conservative tally of nonprofits? political spending.

Federal law requires spending to be reported only if a group's advertisements encourage viewers to vote for or against a candidate, or if they mention a candidate shortly before a political convention or election.

Justice Anthony Kennedy, the author of the Court's Citizens United 5-4 opinion, made a point of saying that disclosure was a key part of the court?s rationale. Disclosure would allow citizens to monitor the new political activity.

"This transparency enables the electorate to make informed decisions and give proper weight to different speakers and messages," he wrote.

But the tax-exempt groups ? some of which clearly exist for no other reason than to elect favored candidates ? are spared by Internal Revenue Service and FEC rules from having to publicly reveal their donors.

Crossroads GPS, co-founded by GOP strategist Karl Rove, claims in press releases to have spent more than $120 million since January 2011, of which only $57 million has been reported to the FEC. At least $12 million has been spent attacking Obama, according to FEC records.

Voters watching its ads have no idea where the money is coming from. Nor do they know who is funding the work of liberal organizations doing the same thing, albeit with a lot less money.

Patriot Majority has reported spending $6.5 million on ads, more than half of which has opposed Rep. Dean Heller, the Republican who is running for U.S. Senate in Nevada.

Not all secret money is coming from nonprofits. Throughout the election season, mystery corporations have popped up, spending huge sums.

Specialty Group Inc. of Knoxville, Tenn., wrote seven checks totaling $5.2 million to pro-Tea Party super PAC FreedomWorks for America in early October. The corporation was created on Sept. 26. The name and address listed on incorporation records are those of a Knoxville, Tenn., area attorney. His published phone line has been disconnected.

The source of the funds, as of this writing, is unknown.

Meanwhile, more than $10 million in funds given to super PACs, which disclose donors regularly, have come from nonprofits, showing that even the groups required to be transparent about their funding sources can still shield the names of donors.

Going negative

The explosion in outside spending has coarsened the political debate, flooding the airwaves in Ohio, Florida, Virginia and other battleground states with negative, often inaccurate ads.

Roughly 80 percent of all spending by both conservative groups and liberal groups has been negative, FEC records indicate.

Fully 100 percent of the nearly $57 million Priorities USA Action reported spending has been on negative ads.

The group, which coined the slogan ?If Mitt Romney wins, the middle class loses,? linked Romney to the death of a woman who lost her battle with cancer.

Another of the super PAC?s most memorable ads featured a worker describing how building the stage on which officials announced the plant?s closure, after it was bought by Bain Capital, was like building his ?own coffin? and made him ?sick.?

Eighty-eight percent of Restore Our Future's spending went toward negative ads, as did 95 percent of American Crossroads' expenditures.

Many of these ads have criticized Obama?s handling of the economy, arguing that the country ?can?t afford? four more years of Obama?s policies. One spot features a small-business owner saying, ?We can?t create more jobs until Obama loses his.?

Others ads have featured disillusioned Obama supporters from 2008 expressing disappointment with the president.

The winners in the post-Citizens United campaign finance regime won?t be known for certain until after Election Day. But Ciara Torres-Spelliscy, an attorney with the Brennan Center for Justice, said it won?t be the voters.

?I fear that we have lost elections on a human scale with post-Citizens United spending by super PACs? and non-disclosing groups, she said. ?The losers here are voters who get carpet bombed with political ads full of half-truths and distortions.?

Researchers Robert Maguire of the Center for Responsive Politics and Alexandra Duszak of the Center for Public Integrity contributed to this report.?

Halloween in Beijing: Pumpkins, pirates, and ... a man in a dark suit

Yes, Virginia, there is Halloween in Beijing. No one dares to toss toilet paper over the gingko trees or egg the local Sichuan restaurant, but a group of American expatriates held a party and trick or treat ? and most of the guests were Chinese, including a man in a dark suit.

By Debra Bruno,?Guest Blogger / October 29, 2012

The leaves are starting to fall from the trees in Beijing, but there are no crunchy piles for children to jump in. In China, leaves are immediately swept up by the legions of workers who attack them with ragged-edge straw brooms that look ready for a Halloween witch.

But daily life in China?s capital city is not especially Halloween friendly, even though you?ll see occasional decorations. In a local mall, pumpkin decals cover the sliding glass doors under the heading, ?Amazing Halloween.? Inside the mall is a large display with plastic pumpkins and a fake-looking haunted house fa?ade. Meanwhile, the expat-friendly restaurants are advertising Halloween parties for children and teenagers.

But try to find some candy corn in this town. The Chinese don?t quite get our western obsession with sweets. ?Fruit is Not. A. Dessert,? my daughter?s friend Emily says drily. What I wouldn?t give for those little ?fun? sized boxes of malted milk balls. One mother plaintively asked on one listserv: ?I am looking for a bakery that can make Halloween cupcakes and treats for my child?s school? Also, is there a store that sells bags of Halloween candy?? So far, no one has responded to her. Another friend has spent the last week or so hunting for a costume for her two-year-old. ?I may just have to paint whiskers on his face and let him wear kitty ears,? she says with a sigh.

Our expat-heavy apartment complex celebrated Halloween in our own way. It took place on the Saturday before Halloween, Saturday being a more-convenient time than the middle of the week, in the same way many Americans push their Thanksgiving celebrations to the weekend after the fourth Thursday to accommodate schools and work schedules.

Where we live, called Seasons Park, one mother took on the thankless task of organizing the Halloween party. After she ran the party last year, the management suggested that one party was enough and she should forgo this year?s gathering. They claimed the festivities were ?not harmonious,? an irony not lost on all of us who had lived through a week of Chinese new year fireworks set off outside our bedroom windows starting at 6:30 a.m

This mother?s reaction was to promptly plan this year?s event. Interestingly, the e-mail she sent out to our apartment complex got positive responses from about 50 Chinese families and only 15 western ones. ?Part of the advertising problem is that posters she put up inside the complex?s 24 or so apartment towers are promptly removed, so word got out by listserv, e-mail, and conversation.

Free, compulsory education: 'ECP requires at least one more month'

LAHORE, October 30th: The Education Commission Punjab (ECP) tasked with working on legislation for the implementation of Article 25-A, which makes free and compulsory education a right for children aged 5 to 16, is hoping to present its recommendations in a month.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Schools Education Department Deputy Secretary Qaiser Rasheed said the commission would require at least another month to bring forth a set of recommendations for the implementation of Article 25-A. He said the matter required intense deliberation. ?We have to look in depth at the issues at hand for the provision of compulsory education and the resources at our disposal. It is not as easy,? he said.

Rasheed, who is also serving as secretary to the Finance Committee of the Education Commission, said it was essential that all gaps be addressed by the commission. Last week, the commission had been forwarded the recommendations of the Finance Committee (Resource Allocation Committee), said Rasheed who is tasked with provision of estimates for ensuring enrollment and retention in schools.

He said the Finance Committee had proposed that the existing infrastructure be put to use to facilitate the government in implementing Article 25-A, which also included upgradation of schools.

The commission had been expected to provide its recommendations in September, but at the very first meeting on August 2, its members raised concerns over the deadline.

Chaudhry Javed Ahmad, the chairman of the Standing Committee on Education and member of the Punjab Committee on Consultation with Stakeholders and Public Hearings in the Education Commission, had also expressed doubts that the commission could meet the deadline.

Chaired by Justice (retired) Khalilur Rahman Ramday, the commission was constituted earlier in July through a notification by the School Education Department. The commission consists of five sub-committees on resource allocation, schools education, private education, legal matters and public hearing and consultation with stakeholders and 20 members include the Education minister and secretaries of seven departments.

The commission?s terms of reference (TORs) state that it shall develop an enforcement mechanism for the provision of free and compulsory education under Article 25-A. It will also seek to ensure 100 per cent enrollment and 100 per cent retention in schools, private sector?s role in the provision of compulsory education, focus on early childhood education and also ensure universal birth registration.

Two Connecticut M-F Properties Reel in $96M in Financing ...

October 30, 2012

By Barbra Murray, Contributing Editor

LCOR has secured $96 million in financing for Greenwich Place and Greenwich Oaks two apartment communities offering an aggregate 396 units in Greenwich, Conn. The real estate company relied on commercial real estate and capital markets services firm HFF to orchestrate the two-loan deal.

Jon Mikula, a senior managing director, and Jim Cadranell, managing director, spearheaded the HFF team. The firm arranged the fixed-rate financing for the Fairfield County properties through Allianz Real Estate of America, securing a $55 million and a $41 million loan collateralized by Greenwich Place and Greenwich Oaks, respectively. Allianz did not exactly have to go out on a limb in terms of risk; the previously unencumbered assets are Class A properties in a Class A suburban New York City locale.

Sited on 30 acres at 311 Putnam Green, Greenwich Place made its debut in 1969, but the 266-unit apartment complex is keeping up with the times, having most recently undergone a renovation in 2010. The 130-unit Greenwich Oaks, located on approximately 29 acres just two miles away at 219 Weaver St., is no relic of the past, either; the 41-year-old property was last upgraded in 2011.

In addition to recent makeovers, the apartment communities boast a location in a high-demand area, and there?s nothing like the prospect of steady, long-term cash flow to attract lenders.

?The [Connecticut] rental market remains robust as an alternative for would-be buyers,? Paul E. Breunich, president and CEO of William Pitt Sotheby?s International Realty, writes in a third quarter report. ?We expect rental prices to remain high and inventory levels low while we emerge from this period of housing weakness.?

According to numbers from commercial real estate analysis provider REIS Inc., the average annual apartment rent growth in Fairfield County is expected to be 4.6 percent through 2016, outpacing the northeast region and the nation, which are expected to experience rent growth of 4.4 and 4.1 percent, respectively.

Proton therapy treatment preserves quality of life for men with prostate cancer, studies suggest

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Two studies led by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have found that proton therapy preserves the quality of life, specifically urinary and bowel function, in men treated with this targeted radiation modality for prostate cancer.

Both studies, led by Andrew K. Lee, M.D., M.P.H., associate professor in MD Anderson's Department of Radiation Oncology, will be presented in a poster session at the 54th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

"As oncologists, we obviously want good cancer control outcomes, but we also want to ensure that patients maintain a strong sense of continued quality of life after treatment, which can be very personal and subjective for each patient," said Lee.

"With this research, we looked at the well being of prostate cancer patients, post-treatment, and it was important that we obtain this information directly from men who actually underwent the therapy, rather than from their treatment providers," Lee continued. "In our own practice, we've observed that patients have done very well as measured by disease control and quality of life metrics. Our findings, both the wider-perspective multicenter study and the research conducted solely at MD Anderson, validate what we observe in our clinic."

The first, a multi-institutional study, and one of the largest quality of life studies of its kind ever conducted in such a patient population, involved more than 1,000 patients treated with proton therapy for various stages of prostate cancer. The men had all received proton therapy, with or without hormone therapy, at one of five proton therapy centers across the country. All participants were at least one year to more than 10 years post-treatment. The men completed the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite (EPIC) survey, a comprehensive and validated tool designed to assess a patient's health-related quality of life, including function and bother after prostate cancer treatment. (The survey uses a scoring system of 1 to 100 in several quality of life areas; higher EPIC scores correlate with better function and quality of life.) The self-reporting was independently conducted by the patient, unaided by their respective treating institution.

This cohort of prostate cancer patients was compared to a cohort of 112 healthy men, all of whom did not have prostate cancer. The median age of those with prostate cancer and those without the disease was 65 and 64.8 years old, respectively.

In the post-treatment analysis, Lee and his colleagues found that men with prostate cancer treated with proton therapy reported excellent urinary and bowel summary scores, 89.8/100 and 92.7/100, respectively, similar to the healthy men, 89.5/100, and 92.4/100, respectively.

When comparing sexual function in both cohorts, the researchers found a statistically significant difference in the healthy men, compared to in those treated with proton therapy.

"However, when further analyzing these scores, it's important to note that decreased sexual function is more often associated with those proton patients who also received hormone therapy, had higher Gleason scores, were older at time of treatment, and/or greater years post treatment," Lee noted.

"In general, our patients are interested in learning how they will do compared to those treated with other modalities, but, more importantly, they want to know how they are going to do relative to their own normal state of health. With such a large data set, this study offers us a guide to have that discussion with patients considering proton therapy."

The second study focused only on patients treated at MD Anderson for prostate cancer with proton therapy; the findings complement those of the multi-center study. All of the men were treated for localized prostate cancer with proton therapy with or without hormone therapy between 2006 and 2009.

For this prospective study, Lee looked at the quality of life scores of 299 men receiving one of two proton doses: one cohort (100 men) received 75.6 Gray Equivalents (GyE) at 1.8 GyE/fraction; the second cohort (199 men) received 76 GyE at 2 GyE/fraction. The median age of both groups was 65 years old. Study participants completed the EPIC survey before receiving proton therapy, and at periodic intervals following their therapy.

Lee and his MD Anderson colleagues found a small but statistically significant difference in both groups in urinary and bowel function from their baseline scores to their scores at three years post-treatment; however, these changes were not clinically significant. No meaningful difference in quality of life changes between the dose groups was noted, except for sexual bother.

The researchers also assessed for toxicities in these patients. The three-year cumulative rates of Grade 2 urinary side effects, defined by Lee as those requiring some medical intervention (e.g. alpha blockers), were 24.1 percent and 17.6 percent for the 75.6 GyE and 76 GyE groups, respectively. The three-year cumulative rates of grade two rectal side effects were 10 percent and 13 percent for the first and second cohort, respectively. Only two men had Grade 3 toxicities, requiring additional medical or procedural intervention.

Three years post-treatment, both groups reported high satisfaction rates with their proton therapy, 91 percent and 93.5 percent.

Lee and his colleagues hope to compare the findings in the multi-center trial to patients who received other treatment modalities. He also plans to perform an analysis of a larger group of MD Anderson proton patients with longer follow up.

Besides Lee, other authors on the all-MD Anderson study include: Seungtaek Choi, M.D., Quynh Nguyen, M.D., TJ Pugh, M.D., Benson Mathai, Steven Frank, M.D., Karen Hoffman, M.D., Deborah Kuban, M.D., Sean McGuire, M.D., Ph.D. and Mark Munsell.

Other authors on the multi-institutional study include: Lawrence Levy, Seungtaek Choi, M.D., and Quynh Nguyen, M.D., all from MD Anderson; Carl Rossi, M.D., Scripps Proton Center; David Bush, M.D. and Jerry Slater, M.D., Loma Linda University Medical Center; Nancy Mendenhall, M.D., University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute; Sameer Keole, M.D., Radiation Medicine Associates; and Anthony Zietman, M.D., Massachusetts General Hospital.

For the multi-institutional study, the EPIC survey was distributed by ProtonBOB, a prostate cancer advocacy organization.

72-Hour Emergency Preparedness Kit ? Vancouver Blog Miss604

October 28th, 2012 @ 1:09am (PT) by Rebecca Bollwitt

Last night a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Haida Gwaii and led to tsunami warnings up and down the coast. Rolling aftershocks hit while everyone was looking for information about our coastal communities. Fortunately our warnings in our area were downgraded to ?advisories? however places like Hawaii were still on guard hours later in anticipation of a tsunami-like event, of whatever size.

It?s times like these that make us think about preparedness. If you grew up in the Lower Mainland like me you?ve probably participated in drills for the last few decade but during my recent trip to the Canadian Red Cross? Emergency Response Unit (?ERU?) practice facility, the idea of being prepared for a disaster scenario really hit home. In an emergency situation you want to be sure to have enough supplies for you and your family for 72 hours, packed away in an easy-to-carry container like a suitcase with wheels or a backpack.

Canadian Red Cross ERU

Here is a list of recommended emergency kit items from the Canadian Red Cross:

  • Water: During an emergency, tap water can become polluted or supply may be cut off. Store two litres of drinking water and two litres of water for washing per person, per day, keeping a 72 hour supply on hand for your family and any pets. Listen to public announcements about treating the water in your area after a disaster. Once per year, make use of your water supply and add fresh water to your kit.
  • Food: Store at least a 72 hour supply of non-perishable food for each person. Select foods that are compact and lightweight, non-perishable and require no refrigeration, cooking, preparation or added water. Once per year, check the expiration dates of your food items. Ensure that there is enough for each member of your family.
  • Manual can opener
  • Crank or battery-operated flashlight, with extra batteries
  • Crank or battery-operated radio, with extra batteries
  • Extra keys, for house and car
  • First aid kit
  • Cash in small bills
  • Special needs items ? medications, baby formula and diapers, and equipment for people with disabilities. Learn more about plans for people with disabilities.
  • Copy of your emergency plan

There is much more information available on the Red Cross? website and during an event like this in the future, you can follow @EmergencyInfoBC on Twitter, the Government of BC on Facebook, and Emergency Info BC online.
